Whenever I visit the city with my grandchildren I have the dilemma of where to take them for lunch. It’s easy to fall back on the many fast food outlets available, but I am not a fan of fast food myself and try to tread the fine line of treating the children, whilst making sure that they are eating healthier meals. That’s where Jamie’s Italian comes into its own.
The restaurant has a busy, casual family friendly vibe; it feels like a cross between a restaurant and an upmarket fast food outlet. The menu is reasonably priced, in fact most school holidays you can get a free child’s meal with each adult main course ordered, which can make quite a difference to the final bill; considering the cost of taking three children out for the day ( one of whom eats adult sized portions) this was a big tick in my box.
Adults have a good choice of pastas, pizzas, salads and mains in two sizes.
Children are well catered for with a range of healthy options marketed at kids by serving them in creative ways: Chicken wrap, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken lollipops, mini beef burgers, fish stew and vegetarian gnocchi (it’s such a nice change to see a kids menu without the usual nuggets and chips etc.) The kids menu includes a choice of main courses, side salad, healthier option drink (no soft drinks) and a dessert. We ordered an entree of garlic pizza, a superfoods salad, a large pasta, a pizza, plus two kids meals and drinks.
Service was quick, the staff friendly and the food fresh, although the avocado on my daughter’s superfoods salad looked a little tired.
Overall, although Jamie’s Italian would not be my first choice when dining out with my husband, I give it a big thumbs up for family dining, and considering that the bill was just under $100 for five of us, good value for money!
