Jane Brook Winery is one of our favourite wineries to visit in the Swan Valley; we have been visiting this winery for over 20 years. Being a small, family-run winery slightly off the main tourist route, it makes for a lovely relaxing lunch in peaceful surroundings.
On Sunday we dropped in on the off chance of getting a table for lunch and were greeted by the friendly staff who found us a table outside under the shaded pergola, overlooking the vines and countryside. We were talked through the ordering process and then invited to taste the wines before making our choice for lunch. Lunch is a choice of gourmet picnic-style baskets with various accompaniments. The baskets are designed to share between 2 people but ours could have easily have fed 3. The selections are displayed in a fridge so that you can see what you are ordering.
We chose the Classic Basket which consisted of a farmhouse terrine, duck pate, vintage cheddar, Brie, olives, 2 dips, chutney, potato salad, coleslaw and a sourdough baguette; which for $45 was outstanding value. There is also a Garden basket ($45) which is a vegetarian option, and also a few extra selections such as a baked Brie, smoked salmon or chicken, or mixed charcuterie available from $10 which can be added to the basket if you want to spread the feast between 3-4 people or if you have a huge appetite! We didn’t choose any of the extras and we struggled to finish our basket.
To accompany our food we chose a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which at $23 a bottle was a great price; in fact, all of the wines are very reasonable, and we ended up taking advantage of a special on offer of a dozen bottles from the classic range for $99.
If you like laid back afternoons spent with a bottle of wine whilst grazing over quality platters I can fully recommend Jane Brook Estate. There’s plenty of parking right outside the door, friendly and knowledgeable staff and no rush to get your table vacated for the next patrons.
