Brendan Pang was one of our favourite contestants on Masterchef 2018 so it was a real treat for my daughter and me to go to one of his cooking classes.
Kitchen Warehouse runs a series of cooking classes throughout the year at different locations in Perth. This class – Celebration Dumplings was held in Kitchen Warehouse in Malaga. Parking was very easy, right in front of the store. Toilets are available for cooking class participants but not for the general public.
Brendan is just as likeable off-screen as he was on Masterchef, very friendly and very good at making pot sticker dumplings!
The class was full at thirty people – oddly just two of them men – I thought that men would have been just as interested in learning how to cook dumplings as we women were. It was a varied age group from teenagers to seniors.
Each person is given a printed recipe and a pen to write down all the tips that Brendan demonstrates along the way. For instance, did you know that a teaspoon of salt added to cabbage before cooking takes out a lot of moisture? Always provided cooks remember to wring out the cabbage in a Chux cloth.
The recipe of the day was for pork potstickers and dipping sauce. Brendan detailed every step letting us know which products he prefers as well as the alternatives and also where to buy the more exotic ingredients. Although the dough was made from scratch, Brendan also bought along ready made wrappers and told us which shops stock them.
When the dough was ready for use, Brendan demonstrated the various ways of folding the dough around the filling – from the basic boat shape to a more complicated pleat. He invited us to come up and try folding dough wrappers for ourselves which was fun.
And then came the tasting which was yummy! Brendan was also happy to pose for selfies.
There is an element of upselling kitchen equipment which I expected as the class was held in a Kitchen Warehouse but this was not pushed. However most people did take advantage of the 10% off voucher included with our tickets.
Upcoming Kitchen Warehouse cooking workshops include:
March 17 – Danish baking – Joondalup
March 24 – Tapas – Midland
March 30 – Easy chocolate – Melville
All tickets are $30.
Definitely, an interesting morning where we all learned something new and I will go to another class – in the meantime I must rush as my husband is looking forward to pork potstickers for dinner…
