SUMMARY:'No Paintbrushes' - Abstract Painting with Marie Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and colourful freeform abstract painting workshop using no plastic items for Plastic Free July.\n\n\nThis is a fun and colourful freeform abstract painting workshop using no plastic items for Plastic Free July. \nMarie Wilkinson\, a visual artist\, will teach you what she has coined ‘The Freedom Technique’ of applying paint to canvas. \nThe tools will be upcycled items\, such as bottle top lids\, cut-up cardboard\, and knitting needles. Including items from nature\, such as leaves\, gum nuts\, and sea sponges. Not a paintbrush in sight! \nYou don’t need to have any experience in painting because this freeform abstract art workshop has no rules and no such thing as a mistake. You will be able to express colour on canvas in any way that suits you in the moment. You can also use your fingers. It is an intuitive process rather than a thinking process. It is as easy as child’s play. \nSuitable for Adults and Youth 16+ \nPlastic Free July™ is a shared global movement that helps millions of people reduce plastic waste through simple\, everyday choices and be part of the solution to plastic pollution. That way\, we can enjoy cleaner streets\, oceans\, and beautiful communities. Will you join Plastic Free July™ by choosing to refuse single-use plastics? \nSign up to the City of Canning Sustainability eNews to hear of upcoming events and initiatives.

SUMMARY:Create a Rag Rug (for 13 – 25yrs)
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create a rag rug from old textiles.\n\n\nRag weaving is a wonderful way to take old textiles and give them new life. Come to this workshop to learn how to create your very own rag rug that’s truly unique. \nIf you have old sheets/doona covers to share\, please bring them to the workshop and learn how to repurpose them into a rag rug. \nWe will be using hula hoops for the weaving frame\, so if you have a hula hoop at home\, please bring it along. Or check if your local op shop has hula hoops for sale. We have some to share if you don’t have your own hoop. \nThis workshop is for young people aged 13 to 25 years. \nThis workshop is hosted by the City of Canning in partnership with the Australian Association for Environmental Education WA Chapter. \nThis workshop has been supported by a grant from the Government of Western Australia and the Waste Authority. It responds to Australia’s growing textile waste problem by empowering young people in Canning with practical knowledge and skills to challenge fast fashion and choose sustainable alternatives such as upcycling\, swapping and second‑hand shopping.
