The Pumphouse Restaurant and Bar Kununurra Review
On a recent trip to Kununurra, there was a restaurant that was recommended by everyone we spoke to; friends, fellow travellers and locals. That restaurant was The Pumphouse. The main pump station is iconic in Kununurra having been built on the shores of Lake Kununurra and was an important part of the Ord River Irrigation System. The station had been included in the register of the Heritage Council of WA in 2007, having been fully decommissioned in 2004. The Pumphouse Restaurant and Bar opened in 2008.
Along with the recommendation of the restaurant, we were told that you must go there for sunset on the deck. As we were there in June, we made sure that we were there by 4.30pm as sunset was just after 5pm. It was a Friday evening and arriving just in time we were able to snag one of the last tables. Beautiful set up outside with tables, chairs and beanbags with an outside bar to service the deck area. The cocktail menu was very popular and a lot of the menu included the local spirits from Hoochery distillery. You are unable to book the outside deck area but it is necessary to book in the restaurant especially at peak times.
There was a peaceful eerie feeling as the sunset over the ranges, the perfect place to enjoy an iconic Kimberley sunset. There was quite a range of cocktails on the menu and they were very nice to go with the sunset. They also have an al Fresco menu only for outside from 4.30-6.30pm. It was a very popular area with a mix of locals and holidaymakers.
We went inside to have dinner and it was very interesting to see that they still had the original pumps in place and the tables were placed around them. The menu was A la Carte and wasn’t big, 5 choices of entrée and 5 of the main course, but there was something for everyone. It was very innovative and had a lot of unique flavours that the Kimberley and WA are known for. Serving sizes were a perfect size and both our meals were absolutely delicious. I had the Home Smoked Lamb and my partner had Chargrilled sirloin steak, both melted in your mouth tender and tasty. They also do lunch Wednesday-Sunday and breakfast on the weekend.
I wish Kununurra was a bit closer because this restaurant would very quickly become a favourite. If you get to Kununurra make sure you give this place a go but don’t forget to book the restaurant (I booked 3 weeks before we got there!) and make sure you are there for sunset.
