DESCRIPTION:Time to create and share your stories! \n\n\nIf you’ve always wanted to learn how to craft a story and perform it in front of an audience\, here’s your chance! \nOver four workshops you will work with storyteller and poet\, Jaya Penelope\, responding to the themes of this year’s Melville Midwinter. \n  \nImportant note: The workshops will run on Thursday evening for four weeks from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. The dates for these sessions are Thursday\, 28 May\, 4 June\, 11 June\, and 18 June\, culminating in a Melville Midwinter performance on Saturday\, 20 June 2026. \n  \nBooking into these sessions secures your spot in the 4 workshops below. \nWeek 1: Introduction to the art of oral storytelling and stories. Activities to reduce a story to its core message. This gives the tale a layered dimension: two creative lives\, different eras\, different modes\, yet united in creative expression. \nAbout the creator: \nJulie Lenora Parsons is a professional arts practitioner and writer based in Fremantle\, where she has worked on manuscripts for three publications as well as articles for OzArts magazine. Julie’s work as an imagemaker in both the visual arts and design for performance arenas has been a constant throughout her career. The integration of image with writing emerged in the late 1990s when she began preparing proposals for her public art submissions. Julie’s multi-disciplinary practice sees her published works riddled with imagery.

This book will be for sale for $10.00 at the presentation. All proceeds will go to CARAD\, which is a Perth based organisation that supports refugees.

As a percussionist\, Chong won the Malaysia Percussion Festival Performance Prize with his own work ‘Rev 3’\, and is a two-time winner of the People’s Choice Award for the Vose Memorial Concerto Prize. He has produced 5-star award-winning Fringeworld shows in 2022 and 2023 with Taiko On\, toured internationally with his band “The Hár” in the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, and appeared as a guest with Irish Baroque. He toured nationally with the Momentum Ensemble\, and recorded for Australian and UK labels\, and with various ensembles for ABC Classic. \n  \nChong holds a Bachelor of Philosophy in Mathematics and Statistics\, and Music Specialist Studies (Composition/Percussion)\, with First Class Honours. His research thesis ‘Predicting Marimba Stickings with Neural Networks‘ won the 2020 Dr Vincent Harry Cooper Memorial Prize\, the 2022 Statistical Society of Australia Louise Ryan Best Presentation Award\, and was recently published in the Australasian Joint Conference in AI proceedings. Join Dr David Lamb as he shares his personal experiences and reflections as well as practical tips and guidance on planning and completing the walk. \n  \nThe Portuguese Camino is composed of a number of walking routes\, including the Central route\, the Coastal route\, the Litoral route and the Spiritual route. This talk will focus on the lesser known\, quieter and flatter route that closely follows the coastline of north Portugal and Spain (Litoral Route) which is a 280 km walk commencing in Porto (a magnificent cathedral city) and finishing in Santiago de Compostela (world heritage city). \nAbout the presenter: \nDavid is a senior academic and has worked in several universities in the UK\, NZ and Australia. He has walked a number of Camino routes in Europe and recently (May 2025) completed the Litoral route of the Portuguese Camino. This talk will share his personal experiences and reflections of this walk and provide a number of practical tips and guidance on planning and completing the walk. This could be for spiritual or religious reasons\, physical and mental health and fitness.
