DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our “Sew and Tell” event series\, where sewing skills and cultural stories go hand-in-hand! \nStitching can not only be a craft hobby\, or a way to mend old clothes. It can also be an artistic practice that promotes mindfulness\, allowing us to slow down in a busy world. \nJoin us in the CoGLAB at Amherst Village Library on Friday the 20th of March\, for Slow Stitch Boro Bookmarks with Monique Mulligan. \nIn this 2-hour workshop\, attendees will learn about Boro stitching\, a traditional Japanese sustainable mending technique\, often used to repair worn clothing. Using boro\, participants will create a patchwork bookmark to take home with them. \nAdults only. Bookings are essential\, and open to the public from the 6th of March. SUMMARY:HDStreetwise Quilting Angels at Amherst Village Library
DESCRIPTION:Practice your craft skills and help your community at the same time! \nVisit Amherst Village Library’s Makerspace\, the CoGLAB\, for free sessions with the HDStreetwise Quilting Angels. \nThis volunteer group was founded by the HDStreetwise non-profit charity op shop in Maddington\, which supplies donated materials. The Quilting Angels repurpose the donated fabrics into quilts and snugs for people facing homelessness\, illness\, or financial hardship. \nJoin us in the CoGLAB between 10am and 2pm on fortnightly Thursdays (see listed dates) for project sessions\, where you can help create quilts for community donation. These will be free drop-in sessions\, open to any community members aged 16 and over. The CoGLAB’s two sewing machines and many handheld sewing machines will be available for use during sessions. \nNo bookings required. \n \nThe HDStreetwise Quilting Angels is a community-focused volunteer group\, dedicated to supporting vulnerable members of the local community through crafting and skill-sharing. They volunteer for HDStreetwise\, a non-profit charity op shop in Maddington. Join us at Amherst Village Library on the 7th of March for a free Author Talk event to celebrate. \nKate Purcell is a local writer/speaker\, peer worker\, and the author of two published books. In her first book “Hope Inc. Overcoming Anorexia and Schizoaffective Disorder”\, Kate shared the story of her struggles with various mental health disorders. One of her greatest struggles was with anorexia nervosa\, a condition that disproportionately affects women all over the world. \nKate’s second book\, “Tell Your Eating Disorder to F**k Off”\, has recently been published\, and is the self-help book for eating disorders\, written by someone who lives with it. Kate’s latest publication is a toolbox for separating who you are from your disorder\, and building a life without constant struggles around food\, weight\, and negative self-perception. \nJoin us at Amherst Village Library on Saturday the 7th of March\, for an author talk by Kate about her new book\, her journey\, and her mission to help others find the hope and healing they are missing. \nCopies of Kate’s books will be available for purchase and signing. \nAdults only.
