SUMMARY:Ida Lawrence: A Bigger Misha
DESCRIPTION:Ida Lawrence’s ‘narrative paintings’ combine text\, images and patterns to tell stories of (mis)understanding\, (dis)connection\, generosity\, failure and surprise. \nIda Lawrence’s ‘narrative paintings’ combine text\, images and patterns to tell stories of (mis)understanding\, (dis)connection\, generosity\, failure and surprise. Lawrence draws upon small observations\, tiny gestures and subtle feelings that the artist has experienced or imagined in the places she has lived: Australia\, Indonesia\, and since 2019\, Germany. \nLawrence enjoys playing with the ‘visual language’ of painting\, or the way in which images can have multiple meanings and an awareness of the ways a painting is made\, including its ‘abstract’ and painterly qualities\, and the way these can contribute to or subvert the story being told. \nOften presented with a mercurial charm\, the construction process (or illusion of it) remain visible in Lawrence’s work\, as layers of paint build up amidst hurried brushstrokes. In the case of A Bigger Misha\, the surface of the painting is interrupted by gash marks and two cut outs-these silhouettes create a three-dimensional surface \, an aspect that is amplified by its immersive installation. \nAccessing WFAC Djeran Season 2026: The Visual Story \nImage credit:Ida Lawrence\, A Bigger Misha 2020-2025. detail3 acrylic cut outs and collage on 200gsm Fabriano acid free paper 245-cm-x-290 cm. SUMMARY:The Pirates of Penzance
DESCRIPTION:Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance is a rollicking\, delightfully funny tale of a band of soft-hearted pirates. \nMistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates by his nursemaid Ruth\, the handsome Frederic is now twenty-one and\, though quite fond of the group of joyous and fun-loving pirates\, virtuously chooses to abandon his profession. Shortly after leaving them\, he encounters a gaggle of beautiful maidens one of whom\, Mabel\, steals his heart. The whole group has a run-in with the pirates (as well as the girls’ father\, the eccentric Major-General)\, but they are able to escape their clutches on the false premise that the Major-General is an orphan. Later\, Frederic leads a band of cowardly policemen to take out the Pirate King and his men once and for all\, but a secret is revealed about Frederic that will change his fate forever. \nComing on the heels of their first international sensation H.M.S. Pinafore\, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance\, or: The Slave of Duty is a delightful farce that is fun for all ages and beloved since its premiere in 1879. \nThe Dolphin Theatre has an accessible ramp\, and seating at the venue. \nVisit Website \n  \nEvent Showings\n11 -13 Jun \n17 – 19 Jun \nVarious start times
