SUMMARY:Crystal People | Joondalup Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:There’s something hauntingly beautiful unfolding on the lakes at Sir James McCusker Park – 52 crystalline human figures rising from the water\, swaying with the wind and shifting with the light.  \n  \nCrystal People is a meditation on community\, transformation and our connection to the elements\, brought to life by French theatrical company Ilotopie. These larger-than-life luminescent sculptures aren’t static installations – they’re living\, breathing presences that respond to their environment.   \n  \nThroughout the day\, these figures play with seasonal light and shadow\, their forms shifting and multiplying in the water’s reflection. They charge themselves with solar energy\, becoming gloriously luminescent as twilight falls\, creating an entirely different experience after dark. Crystal People invites you to witness the grace of air\, water and light giving life to these human imprints.  \n  \nThis is installation art that speaks to our shared humanity\, our relationship with nature and the importance of living in harmony with the elements. Whether you visit during your morning walk\, pause during lunch or return as the sun sets to see them glow\, each encounter offers something new.   \n  \nCrystal People transforms your local park into a space of wonder and meaning. For 16 magical days\, Joondalup becomes home to these ethereal beings that remind us we’re connected to something bigger than ourselves.  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition | CAPUT MORTUUM
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of life\, death and other stories from artist Ian Foster. \nCaput Mortuum’ is a Latin phrase which translates into ‘deadhead’. The name is derived from a pigment; cardinal red; that is a very dense red- purple iron oxide pigment often used in portrait painting. In alchemy\, caput mortuum refers to the worthless residue that remains after a chemical process. \nThis eclectic multifaceted exhibition celebrates life and death in the form of social commentary. Through humour\, Ian Fosters’ collection of paintings\, ceramic sculptures and installations act as ruminations on existence\, transience and human mortality. \nAn artist and historian\, Fosters’ research and practice across a broad spectrum of media is inspired by the historical ambiguities and dichotomies that constitute this surreal world we share. Ian holds a B.A. at Edith Cowan University\, along with a postgraduate diploma in Curating and Museum Studies and a Master of Arts in Art History at the Australian National University. He has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nOpening Event\nFriday\, 13 February\n6.30pm to 8.00pm\nAtwell Gallery\n586 Canning Hwy\, Alfred Cove\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nExhibition Continues\nSaturday\, 14 February to Sunday\, 22 February\n10.00am to 4.00pm\nFree\, all welcome 😊 \n

SUMMARY:Christine de Grancy's 'A Day with David' | Joondalup Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:A rare\, intimate encounter captured between a music icon and artists in a psychiatric clinic — shown for the first time in WA. \nWhat happens when one of the world’s most iconic artists steps away from the spotlight to spend a quiet day with outsider artists in a psychiatric clinic? Photographer Christine de Grancy was there to capture it\, and now\, for the first time in Western Australia\, we’re bringing these extraordinary images to Joondalup.  \n  \nOn 8 September 1994\, David Bowie\, accompanied by Brian Eno\, André Heller and photographer Christine de Grancy\, entered the grounds of the Gugging Psychiatric Clinic near Vienna. This wasn’t a casual photo opportunity. Bowie’s own family history included his half-brother Terry Burns\, whose schizophrenia and tragic suicide haunted Bowie’s life and work. At Gugging\, he encountered something profound: a community of Art Brut creators\, patients who had become internationally recognised artists\, including Oswald Tschirtner\, Johann Hauser\, Johann Garber and August Walla.  \n  \nDeGrancy captured four rolls of film that day\, revealing Bowie absorbed\, humble and intent on listening\, sketching\, sharing coffee and engaging with artists’ stories. This rare\, intimate perspective coincided with Bowie’s creative reconnection with Brian Eno\, inspiring the iconic 1. Outside album (1995).   \n  \nThirty years later\, these photographs stand as both cultural history and intimate artistic encounter\, a rare glimpse into Bowie’s search for meaning\, authenticity and connection beyond the stage.  \n  \nPresented in collaboration with Santa Monica Art Museum\, this exhibition transforms the gallery into a reflective space on creativity\, mental health and the power of art to connect worlds. Whether you’re a lifelong Bowie devotee or simply curious about the man behind the legend\, this exhibition offers an unprecedented window into a transformative moment in music history. \n \nBonus family Sundays\nEvery Sunday during Joondalup Festival (8 March\, 15 March and 22 March) we’re hosting FREE drop-in arts and crafts activities for kids\, including: \n\nZiggy Stardust facepainting \n\n\nDesign your own album cover \n\n\nDesign your own pop star cape \n\n\nMake your own button badge
