SUMMARY:Uncover the Facts: Discover Your Family History
DESCRIPTION:Curious about where you come from? \nJoin the South Perth Historical Society for a practical workshop that will help you begin (or deepen) your journey into family history research. \nIn this engaging session\, local researcher Anthea Harris will show you that family history is about far more than names and dates. Thanks to the many television programs today\, more and more people are asking not only who their ancestors were\, but why they made the decisions that shaped future generations. \nExploring your story can be fascinating\, surprising — and sometimes emotional. This practical workshop will give you the tools and confidence to start connecting the dots of your own past. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nHow to start with the basics — gathering names\, dates and key family details\nHow to navigate online databases\, historical records and archives available through South Perth libraries\nLearn from real examples\, including Anthea’s research into the origins of the suburb name Como\, with time for your questions\n\nDon’t miss out—start connecting the dots of your own history and see where the journey leads you! \n  \nImportant Information \n\nAccessible event – wheelchair accessible\, accessible parking\, accessible restrooms.\nTea/Coffee will be provided – BYO cup/mug in the interest of sustainability\nThe event may be photographed for marketing purposes\, and you will have the option to opt-out on the day.\n\nThis event is brought to you by the City of South Perth. SUMMARY:Murder and Music: An Evening with Dave Warner
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear award-winning author Dave Warner chat about his latest whodunnit\, Sound Mind Dead Body. And as an added bonus Dave will also perform some of his music for us. \nDave Warner is an author\, musician and screenwriter. He has written nine novels and six non-fiction books. His first novel\, City of Light\, won the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award for Fiction\, and Before it Breaks (2015) the Ned Kelly Award for best Australian crime fiction. His novel Clear to the Horizon features the lead characters from both these books. His most recent crime novels are River of Salt and Over My Dead Body. Dave Warner first came to national prominence with his gold album Mug’s Game\, and his band Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs. In 2017 he released his tenth album\, When. He has been named a Western Australian State Living Treasure and has been inducted into the WAMi Rock’n’Roll of Renown. \n  \nAbout the book: \nDevon\, 1929. Members of the Pedhurst and de Reve families gather to hear unpopular matriarch Julia Pedhurst (née de Reve) read from her late husband’s will. One of the houseguests is fighter pilot Fred Willets\, now an inspector in the Kalgoorlie Gold Squad\, who has come to the UK as a beneficiary of the will. When Julia dies before the reading\, and another death follows soon after\, everybody in the manor house is a possible suspect. It is up to Willets\, assisted by the bright young pharmacist Prudence Meadows\, to crack this whodunnit. \nBook this event

DESCRIPTION:Community Open Day to mark 50 years of the National Trust conserving\, celebrating and sharing Old Blythewood’s stories\n\n\nOld Blythewood: 50 Years of Sharing Stories\n \nOld Blythewood on Bindjareb Noongar Country was first open to the public by the National Trust in April 1976\, after the house was gifted to us by the McLarty family in 1972. Join us as we celebrate 50 years of sharing stories of the evolution of this special place overlooking the banks of the Bilya Maadjit (Murray River). \nReflect on the stunning natural environment that served as a farming\, hunting\, and gathering spot for the Bindjareb Noongar people for tens of thousands of years. Explore the heritage house built by John and Mary Anne McLarty in 1860 that was not only the family farm and home\, but a thriving community business. And discover how the National Trust has been conserving\, celebrating and sharing Old Blythewood’s stories so that future generations can continue to enjoy it. \nThis family friendly community event will be enhanced by music from the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) with coffee and treats available for purchase from local favourite Black Velvet and Honey. \nOld Blythewood is located 4 km south of Pinjarra and is a one-hour drive south of Perth. \nAccessibility \nIf you have any access requirements that we should be aware of\, please let us know during the registration process or get in touch with National Trust of Western Australia via phone (08) 9321 6088 or email engagement@ntwa.com.au.
