Reclaim the Void Rug Weaving Session
January 26 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
You’re invited to weave a rug for country to contribute to the Reclaim the Void project. We use a simple weaving technique to weave rugs using upcycled materials (old cotton bed sheets on circular looms) to work on “rugs in progress”. You will be taught how to weave, connect with others, contribute to the project and enjoy some morning tea (coffee/tea and some food provided).
During the weaving session, you’ll learn about this incredible project, how the project was conceived by artist Vivienne Robertson in response to the pain expressed by Ngalia Elders about ‘those gaping holes left all over our country’, and then further developed in collaboration with the Ngalia Heritage Research Council (Aboriginal Corporation). You’ll also hear how Reclaim the Void has inspired rug contributions from all around Australia and the world! Reclaim the Void carries the desire for healing country, healing community, and healing ourselves. It is about acknowledging the hurt and contributing to restoration. It offers people the chance to learn about country and culture.
The rug you weave on will be one of 3000 rugs used in the giant textile art installation, which will be based on an original painting by Ngalia artist Dolly Walker, telling the story of the Wangkatha country where it will reside. The project will symbolize reclaiming and restoring the stories of country, which are impacted through the destruction of country.
Through your tangible and meaningful contribution of weaving a rug, you will be offering your heartfelt intentions for healing and honouring county and its importance to Aboriginal people, community, and culture. This weaving workshop in the spirit of reconciliation and healing country, through mindfully weaving our rugs together. Weaving is fun and relaxing, and accessible to people aged 6+ (children need a parent or caregiver present to weave with them) with hand eye co-ordination and strength in both hands, however, we can modify the weaving to suit everyone’s abilities. Carers and support people are welcome. All materials are supplied.
