Victoria Reservoir, Carmel

Do you even live in Perth if you haven’t visited at least one dam?! Most people will take a drive out into the beautiful Perth Hills to Mundaring Weir or Serpentine Dam. For those looking to explore a different dam, while soaking up the natural beauty and history of the Perth Hills, the Victoria Reservoir in Carmel is an excellent choice. This scenic walk offers a blend of stunning bushland, fascinating history, and a peaceful change from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The walk to Victoria Reservoir, which provides vital water supply to the region, is well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels, making it an accessible adventure for older adults and families alike (as long as you’re steady on gravel pathways). The trail is approximately a 3.5-4km round trip, offering a leisurely pace to take in the sights. This trail, which begins near a section of the Kaartmorda Heritage Trail, takes in several points of interest. First, hop over the white gate (if closed) and follow the road. Then walk left through an old carpark (I’m not sure if the gate opens and this is sometimes available). Follow the wide gravel path as it meanders through lush bush, offering plenty of shade and opportunities to spot local wildlife and wildflowers (winter and spring). Keep an eye out for native birds, kangaroos, and other animals that call this area home.

There’s a couple of benches along the way.

Be sure to pause at the beautiful timber lookout, from which you can spy the city skyline.

From here, walk down the timber staircase to the dam wall.

One of the highlights of the walk is the dam itself, an engineering marvel completed in 1891. As you approach, you’ll be impressed by the vast dam, the steep wall (which you can walk across) and the tranquil aqua blue waters of the reservoir. It’s a perfect spot to pause, take photos, and appreciate the historical site.

I should mention that there’s not one, but TWO dam walls to see at this Perth Hills spot! The old Victoria Reservoir was WA’s oldest dam. A century later, in 1991, the new Victoria Dam was opened upstream as the original dam wall started to degrade.

At the end of the walk, you’ll find a picnic area with tables and benches, perfect for a snack. Pack a thermos, some sandwiches, and enjoy the serene surroundings. Being so close to Masonmill Cafe and Bar, this is a great walk to complete before lunch.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or looking for a peaceful wander, the Victoria Reservoir Walk offers something for everyone.
