Ocean Dragon, Waterman’s Bay

Oceans Dragon Watermans Bay

Is Chinese food one of your favourites? Then pay a visit to the Ocean Dragon in Waterman’s Bay.

It’s a stalwart of the area and most locals have either eaten there or had a takeaway meal from Ocean Dragon. It’s a good place to go for lunch as it overlooks the ocean and there are plenty of window seats. Décor is traditional Chinese with lanterns, some large round tables and dark wood chairs.

Eight of us visited on a very cold Saturday night. The restaurant had plenty of patrons but was not full. As Ocean Dragon does a brisk takeaway trade, the front door remains open and it was not over warm inside.

Service was friendly but slow. All restaurants are short-staffed at the moment and the local places are suffering just as much as the restaurants in the city.

For starters, we ordered Chicken sweet corn soup ($7), Chicken satay skewers (2 for $8.50) and Prawn toast ($17.90 for seven pieces).  The satay and soup went down a treat. Good but not outstanding was the verdict on the Prawn toast.

We decided to order seven main dishes to share. The Mongolian Lamb ($27.90), which arrived on a sizzling plate, was excellent and my favourite of the evening. Garlic beef ($22) was also served sizzling.

Our other dishes were Chicken with almonds ($23.90), Curried king prawns ($29.90), Sweet and sour pork ($23.90), Singapore Mee fun noodles ($23.90) and Chicken in plum sauce ($23.90) all accompanied by steamed rice ($9.50).

There was not a dud between these dishes but kudos to the Chicken with plum sauce. The chicken and the very moreish plum sauce disappeared onto our plates very quickly. I didn’t even manage a bite of the Chicken with almonds as it was finished by the time the central lazy susan arrived at my place!

Ocean Dragon offers a special banquet for three adults for $27.90 pp and charges $31.90 pp for a banquet between four to six people. The restaurant is licensed and allows BYO wine and spirits only – corkage is $2.50 per bottle.
