Bird-watching in Bayswater: Bird ID, eBird & Citizen Science

September 20 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Have a fun and fascinating time becoming a bird-watching citizen scientist under the guidance of our enthusiastic bird-watching tag team, Rachel and Mike Green.

Our birds need our help. Some are in danger of becoming extinct, others are barely known. By watching them and recording what you see on an easy-to-use resource called eBird you will be providing invaluable information so scientists can discover what birds are where and which ones are doing well and which aren’t. And you’ll be connecting with nature at the same time and extending your own knowledge of the birds.

Not sure how to identify the birds in your parks and reserves? Mike and Rachel will give you the top tips on how to recognise them by their calls, darn good looks and behaviour. Awe-inspiring bird photos and videos will be shown throughout – it’s worth coming for these alone!

If you haven’t used eBird yet, don’t worry, there will be ample guidance on its use. Rachel has recorded over 330 checklists on it, in over 130 locations and will show you how easy it is to use, whether on your phone or computer. You may even get a chance to use it for real in the Civic Centre gardens.

People use eBird around the world. You can access all of its information wherever you are, free of charge, add your own photos or drool over the magnificent photographs of every bird featured.

Whether they are robins, parrots or birds of prey, there is no shortage of beautiful and fascinating birds in the City of Bayswater and plenty of parks and reserves. Record what you see, so you gain bragging rights with your friends and help us all get to know the birds.
