Luna Palace Cinemas

Luna Palace Cinema

Luna Palace Cinemas is quite an institution in Leederville. On the corner of Oxford and Vincent Streets, the buildings have been an entertainment area since 1927.

It was originally named The New Oxford Theatre and has had several incarnations including being called The Olympia, which showed mainly Greek and Italian films. It became the Luna Leederville in 1999 and more recent renovations have retained the vintage, art deco feel with updated facilities.

There are eight inside screens at Luna but we opted for the outdoor showing of The Gentlemen. The regular price is $22 but for seniors, it was just $16.

Seating is shared between comfortable looking large beanbags at the front and roomy garden chairs at the back. The area is rated for 200 people but it seemed comfortably full with around 100 on the night we were there. We opted for the garden chairs, which had a cushion and arms broad enough to put down a coffee cup or wine glass.  There was plenty of space around us and everyone seemed friendlier than is normal in a large chain cinema.

All Luna Leederville cinemas are fully licensed and cheeseboards were a popular item with cinemagoers. The cheeseboard ($25 or $35 if you want to include 2 glasses of wine) has two cheeses – hard Cheddar and a choice between Camembert or blue cheese. It also comes with nuts, dried fruit, olives, crispbread, beetroot relish and cornichons.

It was a very balmy summer evening and although we had come prepared with cardigans and light jackets, there was no need to even take them out of our backpack. Friends had also told us to take along insect repellant but again it wasn’t needed.  This was our first visit to Luna but it won’t be the last – we enjoyed the film and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Luna provides disabled access to its outdoor cinema – please phone ahead to enable admission. Disabled toilets are also available.

Leederville train station is a short stroll from the cinema. Buses 15 or 401 will drop passengers at Luna’s door.

Parking is available nearby, off Leederville Parade.
