We’ve enjoyed the little Café at Alkimos Beach, Shore Café, for a number of years. Now it’s big brother has opened right next door – the Oceans 27 restaurant. The new restaurant is small, it appears to have been designed with sunny days in mind, with a large alfresco area and smaller dining room inside. As the restaurant is right on the beach front, in can get very windy when the sea breeze is in. There’s not many places to shelter from it, as the restaurant is totally open.
We sat in the lawn area, under a shady umbrella. From here, you can enjoy beach view as well as the rusty remains of the SS Alkimos shipwreck, after which the suburb is named. The ship ran aground in the 1960s is said to be cursed, with a very colourful history and it’s believed to be haunted.
We dined with family. We started off with a coffee while we waited for our food.
Oceans 27 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the menu there’s options like steak, pasta, burgers, share plates and salad. We share a smoked chicken and avocado pizza ($24) with rocket. This was very tasty with a lovely thin crust.
My Grandson enjoyed a delicious fish fillet and chips for his lunch. There are five options for the under 12’s at a reasonable $10 each.
My daughter is gluten intolerant, and she ordered a bowl of chips to nibble on, as they were marked as “Gluten Free” on the menu. Unfortunately, after she’d eaten a few, she discovered that they weren’t in fact gluten free as they were beer battered. Very worrying for people on a coeliac diet.
The service was pleasant, though their customer service could be much better. My daughter was offered an apology from the manager, but declined a refund as the rest of us had eaten the chips instead. Sadly, she was not offered a food alternative and had to go hungry and watch us all tuck into our pizza, which was disappointing for her.
All in all I enjoyed the view, coffee and casual food at Oceans 27. Hopefully they improve their customer service.
