A Perth favourite, The Windsor in South Perth is a massive place with several different areas to eat or have a drink.
We chose to sit in the outside area on the Mends Street side of the Windsor – a pleasant area to relax and enjoy people-watching on the busy street outside. From the large bar area, the inside and outside areas and the balcony at the front of The Windsor, patrons order at the bar and food is delivered to your table. This is done very efficiently but there is not much opportunity for any interaction with staff which I usually find an enjoyable part of a meal out.
We ordered the bog-standard Chicken Parmi ($25) and the Windsor burger ($22), although our neighbours at the next table later told us we should have ordered the Steak Sandwich ($25) which was given a 20/20 recommendation from the local food critic. Maybe next time!
Both our meals came with chips and salad. My Parmi was huge and I couldn’t finish it – it wasn’t smothered in tomato sauce which often ruins this dish in other pubs – and it was tasty. My husband also enjoyed his meal although neither dish was anything special.
We are often in South Perth so maybe on our next visit we will go to The Windsor’s restaurant. Table service, tablecloths and a wildly different menu would be the attractions.
Or we may pick the Garden Bar in the courtyard just beyond the restaurant and easily accessible from the adjacent car park. This bar, previously a beer garden is very nicely set up with quirky items such as an old telephone box used for storage.
The Windsor has live music every weekend as well as a DJ later in the evenings. While we were there a young duo sang and played guitar. The music was ideal for a lazy Sunday – Norah Jones type songs. Big screen televisions are a feature of The Windsor’s front bar so sports enthusiasts can enjoy a meal and/or a pint while following the fortunes of their favourite teams.
It may be an old style pub and patrons can certainly find old style pub grub but The Windsor is also moving forward with its innovative, fusion-style, restaurant menu and it’s very laid-back Garden Bar.
There is a large car-park, with ACROD spaces, at the side of The Windsor as well as multi storey parking at the nearby South Shore shopping centre. We came into Elizabeth Quay on the train and caught the ferry over to South Perth that was a very relaxing start to an enjoyable Sunday afternoon.
