The Windsor Cinema stands as one of Perth’s most cherished heritage cinemas, bringing entertainment to generations of Western Australians since 1937. Located at 98 Stirling Highway in Nedlands, this Art Deco gem continues to charm moviegoers with its unique character and rich history.
Originally opened as the Windsor Theatre and Gardens on September 10, 1937, it was the largest cinema in the district with an impressive seating capacity of 800. The cinema was revolutionary for its time, featuring a world-first design by architect William T. Leighton that included a movable projector system serving both indoor and outdoor screenings.
The venue has evolved with the times while maintaining its historic charm. In 1988, a second screen was added where the original picture gardens once stood, creating the Windsor Twin Cinema. Today, the main auditorium seats 500 people, while the newer cinema accommodates 210 viewers. Both screens were upgraded to digital projection systems in 2012, ensuring modern viewing quality while preserving the building’s classic atmosphere.
The Windsor’s stunning Art Deco architecture features characteristic Inter-War Functionalist design elements, including decorative horizontal lines and nautical-inspired steel balustrading. Though modernized over the years with improved amenities and air conditioning, the building retains much of its original character.
Now operated by Luna Palace Cinemas since 2005, the Windsor Cinema continues to be a favourite destination for film enthusiasts. Its National Trust classification in 1990 recognizes its significance to Western Australia’s cultural heritage.
Movie lovers can enhance their cinema experience with the Windsor’s tempting refreshment options. Treat yourself to a delightful cheese platter for $30, or upgrade to include two glasses of wine for $42 – perfect for sharing before the film. Take advantage of the $9 wine specials, and unlike many traditional cinemas, you’re welcome to take your wine into the screening with you, making for a truly relaxed and enjoyable movie experience.
Parking is never a concern when visiting the Windsor Cinema. There’s a convenient car park located directly behind the cinema, plus plenty of street parking available on the surrounding streets and bus routes 995, 998, 999, and 103 stop right outside our door.
For seniors looking to enjoy a movie in a venue with character and history, the Windsor Cinema offers a unique experience that combines modern comfort with nostalgic charm. Its convenient location on Stirling Highway makes it easily accessible for movie lovers across Perth’s western suburbs.
