For a relaxed brunch close to the sea, Bayside Barista in Shoalwater is a gem – especially if you follow a gluten free diet, like me. Set in a small local shopping centre just a block back from the ocean and a short drive from Rockingham, this friendly café has a warm, community feel, with plenty of regulars who clearly love the place. Whether they are GF or not is anyone’s guess, as the food here is so good, you’d never know it was missing gluten.

The standout here is the 100% gluten free brunch and lunch menu. That makes Bayside Barista a rare safe haven for coeliacs and anyone avoiding gluten, without feeling like you’re missing out. There’s a good choice of breakfast and savoury lunch options, plus excellent coffee and fresh juices.

I chose one of the more indulgent dishes – the banana bread French toast. Usually, this café favourite isn’t gluten free for obvious reasons. This GF version topped with caramelised bananas, whipped mascarpone and lashings of syrup felt like a real treat with my morning coffee.

The Bayside Barista’s coffee (local Geisha roast) is very well made. It’s an easy spot to sit with the paper or catch up with friends over a long, lazy brunch.

Dog owners are also catered for, with a small outdoor seating area where furry friends are welcome.

From the café it’s just a short stroll to the ocean, making it ideal for a gentle walk along the foreshore before or after your meal. Why not grab a take away from the cabinet too? The flat streets and nearby parking make access straightforward for older adults.

If you’re looking for a calm, welcoming spot with genuinely good gluten free food and a coastal feel, Bayside Barista is a lovely addition to a day out in the Rockingham and Shoalwater area.
