Castaways Sculpture Awards, Rockingham Foreshore

Rockingham Foreshore comes alive each spring with Castaways, an uplifting outdoor exhibition celebrating creativity and sustainability. Staged along the coastal promenade, the event showcases striking sculptures made from repurposed and recycled materials, with pieces ranging from large-scale installations to intricate small works. It’s free to wander, easy to access, and a lovely excuse to make a day of it by the sea.

Castaways features three linked exhibitions:

  • The Main Exhibition along the Rockingham Foreshore
  • The Schools Exhibition at the Foreshore (always a delight to see young imaginations at work)
  • The Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition at Rockingham Arts Centre

For 2025, Castaways runs from 25 October to 2 November. Entry is free. For event details and the current year’s program, visit the City of Rockingham’s official page: Castaways Sculpture Awards. You can also browse an online catalogue and find information about artwork sales there.

Why you’ll enjoy it

  • Relaxed coastal setting: Take a gentle stroll with ocean views and fresh sea air while browsing thought‑provoking artworks.
  • Inspiring materials: Artists transform everyday and industrial waste into eye‑catching pieces, with plenty of conversation starters along the way.
  • Easy to pair with a foreshore outing: Coffee, brunch, or fish and chips are all within a short, flat walk.

Accessibility and comfort

  • Beach access support: The event provides beach matting for smoother movement over sand, and beach walkers are available for loan, making it easier to explore more of the foreshore displays.
  • Flat pathways: The promenade and surrounding paths are mostly level and suitable for wheelchairs and mobility aids.
  • Seating and rest points: There are benches along the foreshore; if you prefer regular rests, consider a lightweight foldable chair.
  • Amenities: Public toilets are available along the foreshore precinct. Nearby cafes provide additional facilities for patrons.
  • Sun and wind: The coast can be bright and breezy. Pack a hat, sunscreen, and a light layer for wind protection.

Getting there

  • Public transport: Take the train to Rockingham Station, then a local bus to the foreshore area. Check Transperth for the best current route and timetable on the day you travel.
  • Driving and parking: Street and foreshore parking is available, though it can be busier on weekends and fine-weather afternoons. Arriving earlier in the day typically makes parking easier.

Visiting tips

  • Quieter times: Early mornings on weekdays are usually calmer, with gentler light for photography.
  • Gentle pacing: The exhibition is spread along the waterfront; take your time and enjoy the sea breeze between sculpture clusters.
  • Make a day of it: Combine the Foreshore exhibitions with a visit to the Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition at Rockingham Arts Centre for a complete Castaways experience.
  • Catalogue and sales: If a piece catches your eye, check the catalogue and sales information via the City page: Castaways Sculpture Awards.

Enjoy a slow, scenic wander and discover how clever artists turn recycled materials into something memorable by the water.
