I adore the delightful Perth Hills. We love living here among the gum trees! My husband and I are working our way around the many boutique vineyards in the Bickley Valley Wine region, found just minutes from Kalamunda. The up and coming spot has around 8 wineries that also have cafes and restaurants, plus there are many more family run cellar doors. A spot we’ve been to a few times is Hainault Vineyard. Their café has now been taken over by a local Chef and his wife and re-opened as French inspired restaurant Mistelle.
The beautiful spot is in the middle of the Bickley jarrah forests, near to the old Perth Observatory. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.
We usually sit on the wide veranda or decking areas overlook the lush vineyards below.
Drinks
There’s a delicious range of Hainault wines on the menu – Rose, Merlot, Cabernet, Semillon, Sparkling Pinot Noir Brut, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. There are also local beer, coffees, teas and soft drinks available. In the past, I loved the dessert wine so much, I treated myself to a bottle of the 2012 Ruby Cabernet. On this day, we ordered a couple of glasses of red – the Hainault Cab Merlot blend is a very nice drop indeed.
Food
The food offering has been elevated by the addition of a talented Chef in the kitchen. We dined on a Friday, when a prix-fixe (set menu) is offered. We opted for the two courses at $38. I chose the house made chicken liver parfait, with fresh sourdough and a onion relish. This went down very, very well with my glass of wine!
My Husband enjoyed the ball of house made pork rillettes, also served with slices of fresh sourdough and baby gherkins.
For main I loved the crisp, confit duck leg, served with a fennel puree and orange.
My husband was equally delighted with the Manjimup grass fed beef short rib, with carrot puree, spring onion and a beef jus. Their other mains option of pan seared ricotta gnocchi also sounded delicious.
All in All
Mistelle is a very tasty addition to the charming Hainault Vineyard, making it a must stop on a tour of the Bickley Valley wineries. We’ll most certainly be back.
