If you’re looking for a wine experience that’s a little bit outside the box, Subsea Estate at the Augusta Boat Harbour is genuinely unique.

It’s an underwater winery – their local wines are actually matured beneath the ocean, off the coast where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

The movement, pressure and cool, consistent temperatures of the sea all play a part in shaping the wine. It certainly makes for a good story over a glass or two!

The cellar door at Augusta Boat Harbour is a great place to spend an unhurried hour. The wine tasting of semillon and shiraz was relaxed, friendly and very informative – no pretense, just people who are clearly passionate about what they’re doing.

Their range of wines is expanding this year, and there are some really interesting wines to try. Their unique wine-making method gives a more pronounced taste of the fruits and other flavours involved in the winemaking, not just a ‘subtle’ hint of ‘insert fruit here’ that you struggle to notice. These wines are different, and I really enjoyed sipping them.

I popped by at the end of the day, but if you have more time, I’d recommend lingering longer over a fresh lobster roll or perfectly cooked fresh abalone. The winery is part of the Rare Foods Australia company, who also have a large sustainable Green Lip Abalone ‘ranch’ in the same area where the wine is cellared.

If you’re already down in Augusta for sightseeing or a coastal walk, it’s very easy to pop into Subsea Estate, learn a bit about their subsea method, and sample a few wines while you gaze out over the quiet marina. It’s a memorable stop for wine lovers and a fun conversation starter long after your trip.

I particularly loved their Semillon (I just had to take a bottle home with me). Be sure to discover Subsea for yourself.
