Tucked away on the western side of Gallipoli Street in Lathlain, Whisked the Right Wei is a neighbourhood café and patisserie worth seeking out. It is only a few minutes from Mineral Resources Park, the home of the West Coast Eagles, making it a handy place for breakfast, lunch or coffee if you are visiting the area.
The café itself is small, with most of the seating outside beneath the striped awning. There is a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, with greenery providing some separation between the tables and the street.
Inside, the cabinets are filled with an impressive selection of savoury pastries, sandwiches, wraps, cakes, tarts and other beautifully presented treats. There is plenty to choose from, although it is the dessert cabinet that immediately demands your attention.
On my visit, I ordered the chicken and leek pie. The pastry is made in-house, with a crisp pastry shell and a crunchy filo pastry lid. The filling was tasty and although the pie was small in size, it was perfect for me.
Those with a heartier appetite may want something extra, but that is not necessarily a bad thing here. It leaves room for dessert, and desserts are where Whisked the Right Wei absolutely shines.
The cabinet was brimming with creative, Instagram-worthy creations, including passionfruit cheesecakes, macadamia chocolate tarts with coffee Chantilly and other tempting pastries decorated with fruit, edible flowers and touches of gold.
After considerable deliberation, I chose the black sesame and matcha tart to take home. With its glossy matcha centre, dramatic black sesame exterior and delicate decorative touches, it looked almost too beautiful to cut into. Thankfully, I did. It was absolutely divine, with layers of rich black sesame and distinctive matcha flavour creating a dessert that was both unusual and delicious.
The café attracted an eclectic mix of customers during my visit. A mother and her primary school-aged daughter were enjoying a delightful morning tea together, several couples were catching up over coffee, and regular customers came and went throughout the morning.
It was clear that those in the know keep returning to this little suburban gem. After trying that exceptional tart, I can understand why. I will be back, although next time I may skip straight to the dessert cabinet!
