How did I not know that this place was here?
Nestled in the heart of the Greenwood Village Shopping Centre is the Shou Japanese Kitchen. It is a hidden gem in the true sense of that much over-used phrase.
It’s been open more than13 years and has a loyal, local and further afield, following. Modelled after the hole-in-the-wall, Shokudo style places in Japan, Shou is very small. There are three tables with four chairs each and seven counter seats. A wheelchair could be accommodated but it would be a squeeze.
Acting on a friend’s recommendation, we went to Shou for lunch last week but couldn’t get in, as it was full. This time around, we made sure we were there as it opened at 11:30.
The menu is extensive with many favourites – tempura, teriyaki, ramen, udon, donburi, Bento boxes and yakatori as well as sushi and sashimi.
We ordered Prawn and vegetable tempura with rice ($20) and Shou’s signature menu deluxe Bento box ($20). Before our orders arrived, we were given a bowl of very good miso soup.
Many Perth restaurants offer tempura on their menu and it is very disappointing to find that the ‘tempura’ is actually watered down beer batter. But at Shou – it’s the real deal. Two prawns, two pieces each of eggplant, cucumber, potato and green beans covered with wafer-thin tempura batter and a dipping sauce were delicious.
The bento box had chicken katsu (freshly cooked, deep-fried crumbed chicken), four sushi rolls, a deep-fried spring roll, cold edamame, pickles, and rice. My husband and I shared both plates, and we enjoyed everything!
Sushi is very popular at Shou. As the restaurant filled up, a steady stream of customers arrived to collect takeaway sushi rolls.
Western tastes are catered for in the California roll and the Avocado roll as well as the more traditional fresh salmon, tuna and katsu rolls. Shou also uses Uber Eats.
The staff was efficient and pleasant.
We have travelled to Japan many times and enjoyed memorable meals at Shokudo eateries and are looking forward to enjoying many more at Shou Japanese Kitchen.
