Victoria Hotel, Toodyay

Once the only hotel in Toodyay where ice was available, the Victoria Hotel on Stirling Terrace is still a leading light in the shire.

Built in 1864 as a single-storey building, the Victoria has been a store, a dance venue, and a billiard hall over the years and finally became a licensed premises in the late 1880s. It is classified by the National Trust and listed as a site with conservation or heritage value by the Shire of Toodyay.

During the long weekend of Australia Day, our seniors group had dinner at the Victoria Hotel. As we were a group of fourteen, we decided to book in the dining area. Online bookings are not yet available but Rhonda at reception was very helpful.

The bar and dining area is huge with a large open but shaded area outside.

It was a busy Saturday night at the Victoria and a lot of families were out for the evening. The children’s play area was popular.

We ordered a variety of food including chicken schnitzel ($26), scotch fillet ($42), salt and pepper squid ($30), barramundi ($36) and linguine marinara ($32). Most dishes were served with chips and salad. There is also a selection of burgers ($25) as well as vegetarian and gluten free dishes. A children’s menu is available.  Starters include four spicy jalapeno poppers ($16), eight creamy garlic prawns ($22) and grilled chorizo ($12).

Desserts are priced at $12 and range from sticky date pudding and a chocolate brownie to churros ($12). The beverage menu has a good selection of international and Australian wines. Port is supplied by the local winery – Coorinja.

Only one of our group did not enjoy their meal but everyone else agreed that it was tasty, good pub grub and presented well.

All staff members were helpful, cheerful and efficient. Full marks for serving fourteen meals at the same time.

The hotel also offers newly built, en-suite accommodation with air-conditioning, wifi and kitchens. No smoking, no pets and no parties.
