Wanneroo Line Dancing – Renegade Line Dancers

Wanneroo Line Dancing

As Billy Ray Cyrusโ€™s Achy Breaky Heart rocks out from the speakers, I am trying to remember when to turn. Yes, I am trying my hand or perhaps that should that be feet at line dancing with the Renegade line dancers in Wanneroo.

On our first morning, my friends and I decided that the back line, out of sight of the other class members, was the place for us. However encouraged by the more experienced dancers we moved down to the front so we could get a clear view of how the steps should be done.

Lorraine Wallis has been teaching line dancing for more than 23 years. All over the northern suburbs, Yanchep, Woodridge, Joondalup, Ocean Reef and at Wanneroo since 2006, Lorraine has been sharing her love of dancing.

โ€œItโ€™s a great way to help balance, co-ordination and to keep bone-healthy,โ€ says Lorraine. โ€œ People can take the classes at their own pace or sit out for part of the session.โ€

In our Friday morning beginners class there were around twenty participants. Mostly seniors, but there was a fair amount of younger people who were enjoying the class as much as the older group. Lorraine says that all dancing is great for seniors to keep active and she has one lady, in the advanced class, who is 87 and another lady, who occasionally attends, is 95. There were a few men in our group and Lorraine would be happy to welcome more men to the classes.

Lorraine stands on the small stage and walks us through the designated dance steps several times before we attempt to keep to the beat of the music. Some of these dances have interesting names such as, โ€˜Pass me a Beerโ€™, Wine, Women and Songโ€™ and โ€˜Symphony Shuffleโ€™.

Itโ€™s a friendly group of people who are all happy to welcome and help newcomers. And the first class is free so dancers can decide if this is the right activity for them.

As for me, Iโ€™m finding line dancing a lot of fun and as soon as I work out my left from my right, Iโ€™ll be hitching and shuffling along with the rest of the class!
