Crown Towers Perth Review

The Mandarin Oriental in Beijing, the Four Seasons in New York and Claridges in London. Yes, Crown Towers in Perth is certainly in good company with its five-star rating from Forbes Travel Guides.

We booked into Crown Towers recently to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was more than two years since our last visit and I was happy to see that the staff and rooms still lived up to the hotelโ€™s five-star billing.

The lobby is huge with plenty of comfortable seating, interesting artwork and lots of light streaming through the massive windows. Access to the rest of the Crown complex is via a five-minute walk through a large open area with good views of the city skyline.

Daniel at the check-in desk was as friendly as he was efficient. Check-in is at 3pm but we decided to chance our luck by arriving around 11:30 as we had a lunch reservation at 12:15. After he confirmed that we had checked in to the WA Safe app, Daniel offered us an accessible room on the fifth floor that we could have immediately or we could store our luggage securely until after 3pm. We decided to take the available room. Daniel apologised for the room being at the back of the hotel and having no bath. But hey some rooms have to look over the car parks instead of the swimming pools and as we were only staying overnight, the lack of a tub wasnโ€™t a problem. However, Daniel sent up a bottle of sparkling wine to compensate which was very acceptable!

Lift access is via room keys. The room was large with plenty of space to move around. The bed was comfortable and the lighting was good. The room controls and access to guest services are controlled by a mini iPad that was easy to use. Our only minor complaint was that the previous guest would appear to have absconded with the TV remote control and we wanted to turn off the screen. Housekeeping staff quickly dealt with this bringing us a new remote control. ย Handrails were fitted in the bathroom shower and toilet area. The shower also had a fixed bench. Twin sinks with a myriad of complimentary toiletries, large fluffy towels and wraparound dressing gowns were the finishing touches.

After lunch, we headed to the hotelโ€™s luxurious bar – The Waiting Room (TWR). TWR is a study in opulence. Large lounging chairs and sofas, chandeliers, a dark wood piano and muted colours combine to invoke an almost old-fashioned country club style. In the evenings live music in a sultry style, fits this background perfectly. TWRโ€™s cocktail list is excellent but pricy at around $24.

We tried several of these concoctions when we last stayed, notably the 1930โ€™s Cosmo, but this time round decided on coffee and tea. Service is slower than Iโ€™m sure management would have liked as we waited more than fifteen minutes in a not so busy room. There did not seem to be many staff on duty mid-afternoon. However, TWR is a lovely place to relax, enjoy the ambience and views of the Swan River. TWR serves a small breakfast menu and a sharing menu from 12 pm onwards.

Crown Towers buffet restaurant, the Epicurean, is very popular. We could not get a breakfast booking despite trying two months in advance. However looking at the huge crowd waiting for entry as we were leaving, I was quite relieved!

One of the big perks of staying at Crown Towers is the outdoor pools. In keeping with its luxury image, the hotel offers a secluded private retreat โ€“ the Enclave. This area has cabanas surrounding an infinity pool. Each cabana has day beds, a sofa, plasma TV, minibar and private service. Cabanas cost $425 on weekdays and $525 at weekends. Entry is for over 18s only. For the not so well-heeled, there are several large pools available.

Crown Towers has a fitness centre that is open 24 hours and a fashionable spa. Bicycle hire is also available.

Watch for special offers from Crown Perth โ€“ rooms currently selling for around $400-500 can be bought for $271 during the current springtime sale. Club rooms start from about $1100. Guests can add access to the Crystal Club for an extra $210. The Crystal Club on the 15th floor has panoramic views of Perth and the river as well as a cocktail bar, buffet dining area and business facilities.

Crown Towers is certainly one of the few Perth hotels that I would describe as world-class. Facilities are good; staff is very well trained and dealt with everything with a friendly smile from the valet parking to check-in, concierge and housekeeping.
