Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Augusta

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Augusta

A trip down to Augusta isn’t complete without a visit to the iconic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. Standing proud at the tip of the peninsula, it’s the tallest mainland lighthouse in Australia, and well worth a look.

Take a drive about 15 minutes west of the small southwest town, along the rugged coastline. Even if you’re not up to climbing the long decent up the lighthouse itself, there’s plenty to see around the grounds, for a small fee (‘Heritage Passes’ are $6pp for seniors). The lighthouse keeper’s cottage has been beautifully converted into a museum, plus there’s a lovely café and gift shop on-site where you can enjoy a coffee.

Lookouts at the base of the lighthouse mark the dramatic spot where the Indian and ferocious Southern Oceans meet. The scenery is breathtaking, though it can get a bit breezy, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea!

There are plenty of interesting interpretative boards to read, and you might even see a whale migrating, in-season.

The Interpretive Centre is found in one of the original lighthouse keepers’ cottages.

It’s really well done with stories from the past, a detailed look into the history of the lighthouse and even tales from the families who called this remote spot home.

The grandkids will love the interactive exhibits too.

For the more adventurous, there are guided tours every 30 minutes up the 176 spiral steps to the top balcony. The stairs are narrow, but there are windows along the way to stop and catch your breath while hearing stories of historic shipwrecks. And every step is worth the view from the top! A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Be sure to grab a refreshment after, from the cafe.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, there is plenty to see at this stunning spot. Be sure to check out the nearby historic waterwheel too, found close to the lighthouse, surrounded by dramatic, rocky scenery.

The name “Leeuwin,” means “The Lioness,” in Dutch. Be sure to check out this grand old lady, built over 130 years ago, and still standing strong.
