Kailis Fish Market Cafe at Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour has been a port of call for a casual fish n chip lunch for our family for decades. It’s been around for even longer – 90 years this year!
Kailis is a modern café offering the freshest seafood – and the fishing boats are parked at the door! The deck is always heaving with people dining on freshly fried seafood. Somehow, we always seem to manage to find a table on the harbour’s edge. It’s a lovely view.
Service
It’s basically self-service at Kailis. You hop in the queue, choose bottled cold drinks from the fridge, as well as any salads or coleslaw. Then choose from the menu and you’re given a buzzer as you pay.
Drinks
There’s a big choice of cold drinks in the fridges. I ordered a pot of tea, they make a good cuppa. Hot drinks are ordered from the little café counter, where they’re also cakes. Kailis is licenced, so if you’d like to enjoy a local wine or beer with your fish and chips, there are lots to choose from too.
Food
On the menu, you’ll find the usual Fish and Chips fare that Kailis is so well known for. There’s fish burgers and tastebud tempting add-ons like squid rings, mushy peas and deep fried banana and pineapple.
About 10-15 minutes after we placed our order the buzzer went off and we picked up the order on a tray, adding copious amounts of malt vinegar and a little salt. We were dining with our two daughters and four grandkids, so we had a BIG order! Portion sizes are decent, the fish is tasty and fresh and the chips hot and crunchy. The kids fish and chips is a generous size too.
If you’re after something a little more gourmet, head to their grill, where chefs cook up super fresh fish and seafood on their BBQs. Choose from WA lobster, Tasmanian salmon, chilli mussels, oysters, garlic prawns, chowder and a generous BBQ seafood platter.
Also on offer in the display cabinet is a range of delicious looking cakes. And gelato. Did you know they even have fish n chip flavour! Not sure if I fancy that though…

We love Kailis Fish Market Cafe in Fremantle, which is always bustling. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy a casual lunch and watch the world go by at the Fishing Boat Harbour.

[…] For British ex-pats like us, the Great British Chippy in Currambine is like a little taste of home. If you’re Australian or from some other corner of the planet, you may never had traditional style British fish and chips. They are a slightly different to what you’re likely to find at Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour. […]
