I love living in the northern suburbs but some days I wish that we lived closer to a larger variety of theatre and food options. One of those days was when we visited the Little French Nest restaurant in Fremantle. This place has local favourite written all over it.
Since opening in 2022, serving all day brunch daily, the Little French Nest has established itself as one of Fremantle’s best restaurants. In 2023 the restaurant was awarded a Gold Plate and is a finalist in this year’s awards. It also took out the accolade of The Best Breakfast Restaurant in WA in July.

There is a large outdoor area at the front of the restaurant that seems to be a second home for several furry friends of various sizes. All looked very comfortable snoozing under chairs while their owners enjoyed a morning coffee.
Inside it is light and airy with a minimalist but welcoming décor. Tucked away in a corner is a good children’s play area – ideal to keep the littlies amused. Owners and chefs Yohann and Gilles both have young families and know that keeping children happy can only reinforce their restaurant’s good experience for parents and grandparents.

We started off with coffee and orange juice ($8). At $5.80, my husband’s large flat white was a lot cheaper than our usual café in the north and he says it tasted much better.

The menu, which changes frequently, is not large but it is very interesting with items such as Pain Perdu – literally Lost Bread. This French toast has a white chocolate ganache, dark chocolate crumb and comes with a Chantilly pear and maple syrup ($21) or how about Oeuf Meurette: poached eggs with red wine, mushroom and bacon sauce, roasted Portobello mushroom and grilled Focaccia ($25)? Yes both of these grabbed my attention but I finally opted for the Crepe aumoniere – mushroom medley, béchamel sauce, Comte cheese cream and rocket ($21). The phrase ‘aumoniere’ means Beggar’s purse so my crepe arrived looking like a baked apple. The medley of mushrooms was sealed inside the crepe and it was delicious. A little more seasoning would have made this dish complete but it was so good!

My husband opted for a Little French Nest favourite – Fremantle, free-range eggs scrambled with three cheeses, served on sourdough and charred on top ($18). He thoroughly enjoyed the dish saying that he could pick out the different cheeses in the fluffy eggs. We paired both dishes with a side of tasty bacon ($6). This is classical French cooking with individual twists.

The children’s menu is also a bit different to the normal Perth offerings with ham and cheese or Nutella crepes, French toast and scrambled eggs (all $11).
And I had better not forget the delicious looking items in the display cabinets. From sandwiches to hazelnut doughnuts, croissants to muffins, cakes to bagels – this restaurant has morning tea/takeaway well covered.

The Little French Nest also offers gifts for purchase. Ranging from coffee beans through teapots, coffee plungers, bags and babycino cups – there is something for everyone.

The restaurant is fully licensed and I must admit that I was tempted by the $12 Mimosas on offer but did mange to resist – the sun was definitely under the yardarm at 9am on Monday morning in Fremantle.
I highly recommend this foodie gem, which also does the occasional dinner service featuring French regional cuisines.
