North Beach Deli Review

Casual dining is the name of the game at the North Beach Deli on West Coast Drive.

Since coming under new ownership in 2017, North Beach Deli (NBD) has evolved into a vibrant part of the laid-back coastal lifestyle in the North Beach-Trigg area.

Devotees of early morning swimming at nearby Mettam’s Pool have made NBD their go-to local for coffee or breakfast after a refreshing dip in the Indian Ocean over the road. NBD goes as far as providing blankets to cover chairs when the swimmers arrive. The café has a large indoor space and three outdoor areas. Dogs are welcome in one of the outdoor areas.

My husband and I visited for afternoon tea on a busy Friday afternoon. Coffee and tea were good but the pear cake we shared was even better – pricy at $7 but delicious. We were so impressed with the NBD that we decided to return for breakfast the following morning. Although the café is fully licensed, we decided, regretfully, to pass on the Mimosas and went straight to the food!

My husband decided on the Biscoff pancakes ($22) – meringue pancakes dribbled with Biscoff sauce, white chocolate, raspberry and vanilla bean ice cream. I had the NBD breakfast – two fried eggs on ciabatta, bacon, baby chorizo, hash brown, spinach, cherry tomatoes and Hollandaise sauce ($25).

Pancakes were pronounced very good although not as light as expected. I enjoyed the chorizo, eggs, tomatoes and spinach but thought the bacon was hard and the Hollandaise sauce superfluous. Nothing on my plate required seasoning so kudos to the chef for on-point seasoning.

There are lots of interesting items on the menu such as a Paleo Plate for those looking for less carbs, a Falafel Bowl, Scramble Sambal, Labneh Eggs and Breakfast Tacos.

NBD provides table service and all staff members were friendly, helpful and knew their menu.

After looking at the lunch items listed on the all day menu, think Crispy Squid, Seafood Linguine, Bao Buns and Soft Shell Tacos, I’m sure that lunch will be our next visit to one of our new favourites – the North Beach Deli.
