Slater Homestead, Goomalling

Slater Homestead

Do you enjoy immersing yourself in a little history and scenery? Well, take a drive to the Avon Valley! Found on the fringes of farming town Goomalling is the historic Slater Homestead (open April to October). This charming homestead, built in 1856 by George Slater (the first settler and farmer in the area) offers a blend of history, relaxation, and a good old fashioned Devonshire tea.

After years of neglect, in 2000 the Shire of Goomalling purchased the homestead and began restoration work. In 2004, it received heritage listing, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The Slater Homestead has been lovingly restored by passionate locals and is once again open to travelers and visitors.

It’s not just a historical site; you can stay here! The bed and breakfast is open year-round.

You can stay in the Homestead Room, or School Masters Room. Please note that rooms are not air-conditioned and the toilets and shower are a short distance away at the Barn function complex.

If you’re just popping in for a look – there’s plenty of history to soak up here. There are interpretative information boards, and places to sit and listen to a yarn about days gone by.

The Slater Homestead holds a special place in Western Australia’s pioneering history. During the pioneering days, it served as a wayside inn, where renowned explorers and gold seekers set out from this historic site. Some of the rooms are beautifully recreated, like the old kitchen.

Situated just under a two-hour drive from Perth, the Slater Homestead is a collection of historically significant and heritage-listed buildings. You’ll be transported back in time to the pioneering spirit that opened up WA’s wheatbelt.

The picturesque stone and mud brick is home to Mary’s Tearoom. If you plan your visit between April and October, they serve Devonshire Teas, homemade cakes, and light lunches every weekend from 10 am to 4 pm. Appointments can be arranged outside of weekends.

So, whether you’re a history enthusiast, or simply looking for an escape from the city, the Slater Homestead in Goomalling is a memorable experience. Step back in time, and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Western Australia at this hidden gem.
