When my husband and I retired to Perth in 2010, we were very happy to discover the White Salt Restaurant in Sorrento. It wasn’t fine dining but it was a fair few steps above the burger bars at Hillarys Boat Harbour. It was a great place to take overseas and interstate visitors to enjoy good food in nice surroundings.
Over the years, White Salt has re-invented itself – something that all good restaurants have to do to stay relevant. Now White Salt is still a friendly neighbourhood restaurant with good food but it is much more casual.
During the recent Covid-19 lockdown we had occasionally treated ourselves to White Salt’s fish and chips takeaway (very good they were too!) but decided to go and eat in now that WA is getting back to a new normal.
Luckily I had made a reservation and we were given a nice table by the window on a very busy Friday night. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. After enjoying a glass of wine (just me as my husband is doing Dry July), we turned our attention to eating. There is a message from the owners on the menu stating that during this period of Covid-19, White Salt has amended its menu and discounted its prices so no further discounts, including the Entertainment Card will be accepted.
For our starters we had Spring rolls ($11 for five) that came with a very spicy sauce and a lovely Serrano ham salad ($13). I wondered if our main dishes would come quite quickly after the starters but was pleasantly surprised that the service is up to White Salt’s usual standards and we had a decent length of time between courses.
Our main dishes were slow roasted Arkady lamb rump served with roasted chat potatoes, carrots, jus and mint sauce ($28) and pan-roasted barramundi with sweet potato, coconut and lime sauce, coriander and crispy shallots ($25). My husband enjoyed his lamb very much but wasn’t as keen on the jus which was slightly greasy and more of a gravy. My barramundi had a beautifully crisp skin and was cooked perfectly. Portion sizes were generous.
White Salt offers a varied menu including pizzas. There are also vegetarian options as well as yummy looking desserts.
White Salt has high tables and a couple of sofas where patrons can enjoy pre-dinner drinks. Accessible toilets are available and there is an ACROD parking space directly outside the restaurant.
During the day, there are good views from the restaurant’s interior and from the lovely outdoor area, which overlooks the West Coast Drive and the sea. Coffee, muffins and toasties are all served from 8am and enjoying Sundowners on the outdoor deck, especially during summer, is highly recommended.
