If you enjoy your dinners with a bit of buzz, Lucy Luu in Mount Hawthorn is a fun, modern Asian spot on the Scarborough Beach Road strip. It’s got a vibrant, younger vibe – think lively music, colourful cocktails and plenty of chatter. It still feels welcoming if you’re not in your twenties anymore. If you prefer things a little quieter, head there for happy hour. I’ve been twice now, and the food has been very tasty both times.
The cocktails are a bit of a drawcard here, with playful flavours and pretty garnishes that suit the “night out” feel of the place. Of course, there are non-alcoholic options too if you’re the designated driver or prefer to keep things sober. I enjoyed the Geisha’s Blush, a gin and raspberry cocktail which is also available without the alcohol. I also enjoyed a crisp chardy.
Lucy Luu specialises in modern Asian share plates, so it’s perfect if you like to try a bit of everything. The menu is about 95% gluten free and free from MSG, which is a big plus for anyone with dietary sensitivities, like myself. It’s also handy if you’re dining with family members who have different needs – there’s something for everyone. Here’s what we enjoyed:
Snapper ceviche with a ginger and lime dressing.
Pan fried dumplings( not GF) and popcorn chicken. The popcorn chicken was a BIG hit, very crisp, moist and meaty and a good serving!
Crispy chicken with 5 spice salt.
Wok fried broccoli was another crowd pleaser – the sauce it was cooked in is SO delicious. Fried rice with prawns is also a tasty side.
Crispy pork belly was good, with a very fresh herb and apple salad.
Lucy Luu is located along the main Mount Hawthorn strip, but I’m happy to report that parking is easier than you might expect. There’s convenient parking behind The Mezz shopping centre, just a short walk away, which makes the whole outing a lot less stressful – especially on a busy weekend evening.
While the atmosphere is definitely energetic, it’s a good choice if you’re an older adult who still enjoys going somewhere “a little bit cool”, without committing to a late-night venue. Go early for a more relaxed sitting, order a spread of share dishes and enjoy a night out that feels very approachable.
