Voyager Estate, Margaret River

Voyager Estate, Margaret River

One of the most delightful wineries in the Margaret River Region is Voyager Estate. The unique style of the striking white buildings were inspired by the Cape Dutch farmsteads of South-Africa. As we arrive at Voyager, we couldn’t miss the giant Australian flag flapping in the breeze. Mounted on a 30 metre flagpole. The 15 metres x 7.5 metre flags is one of the largest flags in Australia. As well as the flag, another striking feature are the roses. We visited in Spring and they were blooming lovely!

We walked through an arched arbour, covered in hundreds of roses. Rose bushes are also planted at the end of each row of vines. As well as this being beautiful, I was interested to learn that there is a practical purpose too. They tend to show signs of damaging pests and disease quicker than vines.

The formal garden with agapanthus and yellow day lilies, and hedges are immaculate and a pleasure to take a stroll around. Liquid Amber, Claret Ash, Manchurian Pear and Plane trees provide plenty of shade.

The walled working kitchen garden is also a fascinating spot for a wander, particularly if you like to grow your own.

The freshly grown herbs and vegetables (including many heirloom varieties) are used in the restaurant.

Voyager’s Cellar Door or “Wine Room” is open for tastings. Here, for $9, you can take a “flight” through Voyager’s range of wines. Each flight has three wines to sample and enjoy. Flights are complimentary with the purchase of wine. Taste plates are also available, with local charcuterie, pickled Estate grown garden vegetables, cheese and in-house baked bread.

The wine room is also home to a gift shop, full of goodies for food and wine lovers.

On this occasion we didn’t visit the restaurant, though we have heard many good things about the impressive degustation-style lunches there – a great excuse for us to visit the exquisite Voyager Estate Margaret River again!
