Fremantle Library

Fremantle Library at the Walyalup Civic Centre is one of those places that immediately feels welcoming.

The modern, light‑filled design makes it a lovely spot to relax, browse, or simply enjoy a quiet moment in the heart of Fremantle’s renewed Kings Square precinct. With comfortable seating, wide walkways and helpful staff, it’s an easy place to spend time, whether you’re visiting solo or meeting friends.

Membership is free for all West Australian residents, giving you access to thousands of books, magazines, audiobooks and digital resources. There’s public Wi‑Fi, computers, printing, scanning and plenty of places to charge your own devices. The library also offers practical extras such as loanable iPads, interactive screens, gaming consoles and even a 3D printer.

A highlight for many visitors is the Wanjoo Lounge, now the permanent home of the Fremantle History Centre. This warm, community‑focused space is located on Level 1 and is run by volunteers. It’s open weekdays from 9am to 3pm and offers a comfortable place to enjoy a cuppa, read the newspaper, chat with others or explore Fremantle’s rich historical archives. The History Centre’s move here has made the city’s heritage collection more accessible, especially for those who prefer a relaxed, easy‑to‑navigate environment. The City of Fremantle also hosts regular activities in the lounge, from gentle movement classes to tech help sessions, making it a friendly hub for staying connected and engaged.

If you’re visiting with grandchildren, the children’s area downstairs is a delight. The playful design includes cosy reading nooks and a small slide, and there are weekly Storytime and Rhymetime sessions. Older kids can enjoy Lego clubs, sewing groups and tech‑based activities, while teens have their own youth zone with gaming consoles. The new playground just outside the library is another bonus for families.

With the FOMO dining precinct right next door, it’s easy to pair your visit with a relaxed meal or coffee. Whether you’re researching local history, enjoying a peaceful read or spending time with loved ones, Fremantle Library is a warm and beautifully designed community space that offers something for everyone.
