If like me, you loved Odyssea, you’re going to want to check out ‘new’ spot Bert’s. It’s found in the same seaside venue that I enjoyed many a lunch, dinner and boozy brunch at over the years. Perched above the sand at City Beach, Bert’s is a nod to times gone by. The name is a nod to the beachfront’s much‑loved “Bert’s Shop” aka the old City Beach Tea Rooms. It was a popular beach kiosk and surf hangout from the 1930s through to the 1970s.

Walk in and you’ll immediately notice a fresh change. The décor is relaxed coastal neutrals, light, and bright, but to my disappointment the long balcony area is gone. What was a distinct separation of dining room and balcony, has now become a much larger space, but feels closed in with the windows shut.

The once up-market spot now feels much more casual. If you are craving outdoor dining, the large car-park side deck is still there.

The airy space feels modern without being cold. There’s a nice buzz, service is friendly and on the ball. Order at the bar, or via QR code. Our food arrived in record time – almost too fast and we did feel that cut our lunch a little short.

The menu leans into fresh, summery food that’s easy to share – plenty of seafood, crisp salads, pizzas and share-style plates. It’s easy to mix and match a few dishes between two or three people. It’s worth noting that most of their menu is gluten free, very much appreciated. I was spoiled for choice in the GF department. I shared a cauliflower popcorn with vegan mayo, gochujang (a Korean savory, sweet, and spicy fermented condiment), pickled ginger and sesame.

Plus, a crisp Karaage chicken with Kewpie and pickles – good, but I’d hoped for more depth of flavour – more marinating time perhaps?

While the men went it alone with their extra crispy fish and rustic chips.

If you enjoy a glass of wine with lunch, there’s a good selection by the glass, so you don’t have to commit to a whole bottle. Think share plates, fresh seafood, salads with plenty of crunch, and a menu that is packed with gluten free options. If you’re a fan of fish dishes, you’ll be happy here, and there are a couple of good dairy free and veg options too. Time it for a sunny day, sit by the window, and let the view do the rest. Being so new, Bert’s is very popular, so booking ahead is wise.
