Canning Dam, Ashendon

Craving a peaceful day in the Perth Hills with big views, fresh air and plenty of space to relax? Canning Dam is a beautiful spot just beyond Roleystone that blends nature with a fascinating slice of Western Australian history. You’ll find sweeping vistas from the dam wall, easy picnic options, and gentle walks through jarrah forest—perfect for a leisurely day out.

Why go

Canning Dam’s dam wall is the star attraction. After winter rains, the outlook over the reservoir and surrounding bushland is especially striking. If you prefer to take it easy, there are grassy, shaded picnic areas and a viewing platform where you can sit and soak up the scenery without a long walk. Early risers may spot kangaroos, and the area is rich with birdlife.

Picnics and facilities

  • Shady lawns and picnic tables in both upper and lower areas
  • Free gas barbecues
  • Public toilets
  • Small, fenced Playground in the lower picnic area (handy if you’re meeting up with family)
  • Viewing platform over the reservoir
  • Open daily: 6pm gate closure in summer; 5pm from May to October

Gentle exploring

You can stroll across the dam wall for big views, or follow short, signposted trails that loop past historic features like the old contour channel and stilling chamber. Prefer to minimise walking? You can drive and park closer to the dam wall; from there, it’s only a short set of steps to the top.

Accessibility and comfort

  • Accessible toilets and designated accessible parking bays are near the main car park
  • Paths around picnic areas are mostly flat; some trails include uneven ground or steps
  • Mobile coverage can be limited—let someone know your plans before you go

Tip: If balance is a concern, bring a walking pole for the dam wall and wear supportive shoes with good grip.

Important notes

  • No fishing or swimming—this is a protected drinking water catchment
  • Dogs are not permitted within the recreation area
  • Gates close at 6pm (5pm May–Oct). Arrive earlier in the day to allow time for a relaxed visit

Getting there

Canning Dam Road, Ashendon (near Roleystone). From Perth, take Albany Highway towards Armadale, then Brookton Highway to Roleystone, and follow signs via Croyden Road to the dam. There’s ample on-site parking.

Make a day of it

  • Araluen Botanic Park is a short drive away for garden wanders and a café stop
  • Nearby dams offer more easy walking and picnic spots: Churchman Brook Dam (lovely for picnics) and Wungong Dam (walk the wall and look for the bird mural)

What to bring

  • Picnic or barbecue supplies (there’s no kiosk on site)
  • Water, hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A thermos and camp chairs or a picnic rug for extra comfort
  • Camera or binoculars for wildlife and views
  • Light jacket in cooler months; the wall can be breezy

Best time to visit

Late winter through spring offers lush green scenery, flowing water and wildflowers. Mornings are cooler and quieter year-round, especially in summer.
