Eccolo Hillarys

Eccolo is Italian for ‘here it is’ and Eccolo in Hillarys ensures that it is the place to experience a traditional Italian kitchen reflecting the seasons.

Set in the Flinders Shopping Centre, Eccolo is certainly very like a traditional Italian neighbourhood restaurant.

My husband and I visited on a Tuesday evening and we were surprised how many fellow Hillarians eat out during the week!

All staff members were very friendly and made everyone feel at home in the comfortable surroundings of Eccolo.

We studied the menu and decided to share the Bruschetta – simply two slices of good bread smothered in fresh tomatoes and olive oil – a good way to start an Italian meal.

The specials board had a seafood broth, a calzone and a pizza special but my husband chose the Crab linguini with garlic and chilli ($30) whilst I opted for the main menu’s version of Penne porcini ($27).

Portion sizes were generous. Frank very much enjoyed his crab linguine and my penne came tossed with Italian sausage, mushrooms and chilli in a Parmesan cheese sauce – delicious.

Eccolo’s menu includes antipasto, salads and pasta. There was a roaring trade in take-away wood-fired pizzas. Eccolo offers a good selection of pizzas ranging in price from $16 to $28.

Décor is plain with a lot of good wood and greenery. Seating is mixed – mainly standard tables with metal chairs although there are a few booth type tables and high tables and stools near the bar.

Italian goodies such as olive oils, pasta, rum babas and Chianti are available to buy.

Eccolo also offers a pizza masterclass. It’s a 2.5 hr hands-on session, held on the first Saturday of each month at 12 noon. Cost is $100 per person and includes a glass of wine or beer, making your own pizza and taking home a box of products. Bookings are essential.

Flinders Shopping Centre is a good place for locals to shop and definitely a good place to eat at such a friendly neighbourhood place as Eccolo.
