Augusta is famous for being the closest town to where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. For a quintessential beachside experience, Flinders Bay, is the place to be in Augusta. This historic spot, 3 minutes south of town, offers a much gentler pace. Popular for a morning dip or a family get-together, the bay is beautifully protected by ancient rocks and reef. The often-calmer waters are perfect for a paddle, watching the waves roll in, or if you’re lucky during the winter months, spotting a whale breaching in the distance.
There’s a handy timber ramp, with steps into the water, so you don’t have to climb over slippery rocks or seaweed. We’ve visited in two Januarys and once the beach was clear, though in 2026 there was plenty of pesky seaweed. Kids like to jump from the jetty and pontoon.
The foreshore is well-equipped with picnic facilities, public toilets (and changing facilities), and plenty of shade from giant pine trees, so you can settle in for the afternoon with a thermos and good book.
If you have grandies in tow, they are sure to enjoy the Filnders Bay ship playground. When we visited with the kids, they were delighted someone had attached a pirate flag to its mast!
In peak summer times (school holidays and weekends), you may even find a coffee and ice cream truck parked up there.
Like a quieter pace? Just around the corner ‘Granny’s Pool’ (a one-minute walk) is a fantastic spot for swimming in the shallows with minimal waves or seaweed.
Flinders Bay is simple, scenic, and very West Australian. We stayed right on the beach at Flinders View Beach House. There is also a Caravan Park here, at the bay. We just loved our beach days here.
