FRINGE WORLD REVIEW: Thunderstruck – A Night of Classic Rock

Last night we were treated to a truly unique performance at Planet Royale, where The Blue Violin (founder of the prestigious Boston String Quartet) delivered a mesmerizing show that bridges the gap between classical and rock music.

Set in the beautiful Royale Theatre and illuminated by 500 flickering candles, this world premiere season is something special. The Blue Violin, who has performed alongside music legends like Paul Simon and John Mayer, demonstrates extraordinary talent as he transforms beloved rock anthems into stunning violin arrangements using innovative looping techniques.

The highlight of the evening had to be his breathtaking rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” – you could have heard a pin drop during this performance. And true to the show’s title, his version of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” brought the house down!

While rock classics form the foundation of the show, there are delightful surprises with contemporary pieces from Coldplay and Billie Eilish, and even a clever interpretation of “I Am Ken” from the Barbie movie (one for the grandkids!). It’s a wonderful demonstration of how classical instruments can breathe new life into modern music.

What makes this show particularly enjoyable is the intimate venue setting and the artist’s engaging presence as he shares stories from his musical journey. The sound quality is excellent, and the candlelit atmosphere adds a magical touch to the evening.

Ticket prices range from $50-$60 (concession available at $42.50), and the show runs for a comfortable 60 minutes. Playing at Planet Royale until January 28th.

Perfect for: Music lovers, particularly those who appreciate both classical and rock genres. A great opportunity to see a world-class musician in an intimate setting.

Accessibility: The venue is easily accessible, with comfortable seating options including booth seating.

⭐ Seniorocity Tip: Opt for the booth seating ($60) for extra comfort. Arrive early to enjoy a pre-show drink in the beautiful Planet Royale venue.

Tickets available through Fringe World website.
