Frui Momento Review
After reading Rob Broadfield’s glowing review of new Margaret River restaurant Frui Momento, we couldn’t wait to try it and booked that day!
Frui Momento (Latin for enjoy the moment) is part of the Cherubino Wines family and has a fabulous setting. In front of the main stone building (which could double as a Tuscan farmhouse) is a large lake, there are also lovely gardens and a bush backdrop which all combine to make it a great location.
Inside a wood and stone theme is carried out perfectly. An open fire, interesting artworks plus the casual table settings set the scene for relaxed dining.
A terrace area and some outside tables add to the laid-back atmosphere.
Opened in December last year, this 50-seater contemporary restaurant also houses a raw bar and a champagne lounge.
The restaurant boasts an extensive wine list featuring local wines as well as a good European selection.
Now to the food! We decided to give the caviar menu a miss but if 20g of Russian sturgeon caviar (served with a buckwheat waffle, sour cream and cured egg) for $180 floats your boat then go for it.
To begin we were served a sweet milk bun and butter. It was too dense for my taste although my husband enjoyed it.
For our starter, we had half a dozen Albany oysters ($5 each) and four Abrolhos Island scallops ($6.50 each). Except for the squid and octopus, all seafood starters at Frui Momento are served raw.
Our dish was beautifully presented and we thoroughly enjoyed the seafood together with the accompanying pickled cucumbers, cocktail sauce and seaweed.
Frui Momento offers a two-course menu of entree and main for $75 and three courses that includes a dessert for $90. We opted for two courses and I chose a Wagin quail with yuzu and spring onion foam for my entrée. My husband went for the Hiramasa kingfish with bonito and wasabi. Both dishes were outstandingly good and again beautifully presented.
We both decided on the Margaret River Wagyu with shitake and potato for our main course. It was a very good dish and the potato cooked in miso butter was a revelation.
Frui Momento is a winner – chef Seth James, previously at Wills Domain is obviously at the top of his game. It’s a great addition to the already excellent Margaret River food scene.
