I’m pretty confident that I’ve found the ultimate spot for a balmy summer dinner in Perth. Ginga in Mount Hawthorn is a suburban oasis. Stepping into their lush alfresco dining space feels like being transported straight to a tropical resort, complete with a serene fishpond right by the tables.

I recently shared a meal there with an old friend, and we were really pleased by our choice to try something new. We enjoyed the Asian-fusion menu, packed with those vibrant Thai flavours we all love – think lemongrass, coconut, and just the right amount of spice. We started with a fresh tuna tataki with zesty ponzu (soy and citrus) dressing.

For mains we shared two dishes. A Roast Duck Curry was absolutely delicious, balanced perfectly with sweet lychee and plump cherry tomatoes.

The Pad Thai noodle dish, served with a delicate egg lace, was another standout.

The wine and cocktail list is really solid too. I was impressed by the Cullen Chardonnay, before moving onto a lychee and elderflower mocktail, as I was driving.

While the service was a little patchy at times, the staff were friendly. There’s an option to order via QR code, but I found that glitchy. Waving over staff was hit and miss, needing to ask for water, and to order our meals. There is plenty of parking, as Ginga is located next to a local primary school, but we still had to park a couple of streets away.

Ginga is a leafy, relaxed setting that’s perfect for a long catch-up. Even the indoor dining room feels open and airy. The venue is open for brunch as well (with a well-stocked cake cabinet), but there’s something special about sitting by the water, surrounded by fairy lights, on a warm evening. Definitely worth a visit before the summer heat fades.

Find Ginga at 139 Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn.
