A restaurant with a beach bar atmosphere in a suburban shopping centre? Difficult to pull off but Good Company at Karrinyup ticks all the boxes for that relaxed, laid-back vibe. It helped that we went to lunch at Good Company on a lovely sunny day while the umbrellas were fluttering gaily over the outside tables. This is definitely the kind of eating house that would be perfect along the coast, but it’s fine where it is too.
From the owners of The Camfield and The Stables, Good Company is on the West Deck of the newly renovated and expanded Karrinyup Shopping Centre and is right next door to Hoyts Cinema – very handy to have a meal at Good Company before watching the latest blockbuster.
It’s a large restaurant with various seating areas – a few tables for fours, high tables, booths and long tables inside. Outside is another mixture of seating, including comfortable sofas. We arrived around 11:30am for an early lunch and it was fairly empty. But by the time we left at 1pm it was rapidly filling up.
Orders are taken at the bar and delivered to your table. Many of the items are designed to be shared and food comes out from the kitchen when the dish is ready, in no particular order.
Nibbles ($11-$21) include buttermilk-fried chicken, fish tacos and mozzarella arancini. There are also nods to the Indian Ocean with dishes such as Sautéed Calamari and Kingfish Sashimi. Mains are substantial and range in price from $26 to $46. Pizzas ($23-25) were very popular.
My husband decided on the Blue Swimmer Crab with linguine ($34) which included tomato, capers, shallots, chili, gremolata and shaved bottarga (cured and salted fish roe) while I opted for the Wagyu burger stuffed with American cheddar, bacon, aioli, onion jam, pickles, lettuce and tomato ($27). My husband was impressed with the large amount of crab in his dish and enjoyed the taste.
My burger was moist but quite underseasoned. The chips were in a class by themselves – very crispy and very good. Grandkids are catered for with the Little Company menu.
There is an extensive drinks menu with a myriad of cocktails as well as wine and beer. I felt the drinks were a bit pricey at $11 for a glass of white wine and $12 for a Swan draught beer however that seems to be in line with the area.
Staff was very good – keen to help and friendly as well as efficient.
Good Company has music with popular DJs at the helm every weekend as well as showing sport on the large outside screen.
Our receipt was headlined Karrinyup Tavern- a local pub which closed in the 1980s but Good Company is a great replacement and it’s an ideal spot to become a favourite local pub.
