My husband and I enjoy drives through the Perth Hills. A popular spot we go to is Mundaring Weir, where there’s walking trails, the scenic dam and of course the Mundaring Weir Hotel. The grounds are large, there’s lots of spots to enjoy a drink over a lazy lunch and there’s an amphitheatre where they stage regular concerts.
The historic hotel is over 110 years old. It was first built to service the workers constructing the dam and goldfields pipeline, then later sightseers and picnickers. The character filled bar is full of antiques and curios.
The hotel is found right by many bush trails, which meander through the adjoining state forest and around Mundaring Weir. The famous Bibbulmun track also goes right past the Hotel, making it a great spot for a refreshment stop. You might even see some local wildlife!
Food
The hotel’s café is found downstairs. There are lots of decks and verandas around it, in an eclectic maze-like fashion. We ordered our food at the café and were given a buzzer to notify us when our lunch would be ready for collection.
We enjoyed steak sandwiches. A scotch fillet steak is served on Turkish Bread with onion jam, cheddar cheese, beetroot, rocket and BBQ sauce. On the side were chunky beer battered chips.
If you’re visiting with family there’s a wonderful kids playground hidden behind the big stage. The play equipment is in a giant sand pit, protected from the summer sun by a thick canopy of leaves. Dogs are also welcome in the grounds, but must be kept on a leash.
The hotel is busy on weekends, particularly on Sunday afternoons, when there’s live music playing in the bandstand.
You’ll also be able to smell the delicious aromas from their famous lamb spit roast, which is served in the afternoon.
All in All
The Mundaring Weir Hotel is a good spot for a lazy afternoon in the beer garden. The food home-cooked style pub grub.
