Gourmandise & Co Review
What a quirky cafรฉ and how good is that food? That was our reaction to the stunning Gourmandise & Co in Albany.
Since opening in 2014, Gourmandise & Co have created a strong local following and been number one on Trip Advisorโs Albany list for the past six years.
We visited after a morningโs sightseeing and felt like we had walked into an old country cafรฉ in France. A large communal table dominates the small room. The table was made from a single slab of jarrah.
Including the communal table, seating inside the cafรฉ can take 28 customers. The front verandah, which has tabletops perched on barrels and the outside area takes another 20 people.
Gourmandiseโs wood-firing oven is visible in the open kitchen and it was interesting to see the owner at work making the important finishing touches to every plate of food.
Patisserie-level cakes are in a glass cabinet at the counter. Although tempting we decided that lunch was our priority.
The blackboard menu is small but includes mini-viennoiseries, paninis, croissants and quiches. I would normally term this menu as very casual but there was nothing casual about our plates when they were delivered to the table.
I ordered a Quiche Lorraine ($13) and my husband opted for the Ham and cheese croissant ($14). Yes, it is pricier than the normal cafรฉ offerings but these dishes were not run of the mill cafรฉ food! The addition of confit onion gave a quiche an extra depth of flavour and the edible garnishes took the dish to another level. My husband enjoyed his toasted croissant just as much.
An eclectic collection of French artefacts is on display. Local produced goods including jewellery, crockery and foodstuffs are for sale inside the cafรฉ.
A word of warning โ Gourmandise & Co frequently sell out of the excellent food that is made fresh every day and when that happens, the cafรฉ closes. So get in early!
