Handasyde Strawberry Farm just outside Albany is a family-owned business and everything for sale is made in-house.
Opened in 2018 selling just gelato and strawberries the business has grown to a thriving café and was the 2020 Business of the Year winner at the Great Southern Business Awards.
On a recent trip to the area, we stopped to buy a large punnet of strawberries as our dessert for the evening. The smell and taste of these strawberries took me way back to my childhood – these were real strawberries that tasted wonderful. So much better than the strawberries available in our local supermarkets.
Another day we dropped into Handasyde’s café for afternoon tea and of course, had a strawberry tart. Luscious pasty, strawberry jam and cream topped with more strawberries – really delicious. The staff were extremely pleasant and friendly – a real bonus.
Our neighbouring table ordered a Ploughman’s lunch ($22.50) which included ham, cheese, pickled onions, dill pickles, potato salad, egg, home-baked bread and strawberry relish. A Farmer’s high tea for two people ($32.50) is a popular order. The café also has light lunches such as soup, bagels and toasted sandwiches among other items. Their cakes and dessert options looked excellent and those will be on our list for our next visit.
Handasyde’s gelato is much in demand, especially from child visitors – when their parents and/or grandparents can tear them away from Handasyde’s amazing children’s area with hay bales, a cubby house and toys.
Handasyde also has a busy Party Room for children of all ages with games such as Jenga, Quoits and Connect 4 for hire.
There are lots of strawberry related products to take away – freeze-dried strawberries, jam, relish, sauces and syrup. Many of Handysde’s products are certified organic.
The nearby farm has a pick-your-own strawberry facility during the season with farm gate sales of strawberries, eggs and gelato
A recent arrival at the Strawberry Farm is Eric the Emu, created by local business Designer Dirt.
