Hijinx Hotel, Karrinyup

If you book in at Hijinx Hotel, at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, you’re guaranteed an eventful stay! If you like a little fun, like an escape room, or you’re looking for something different to do in Perth – head to Hijinx Hotel. This new-ish spot at the popular centre’s entertainment precinct (next to the cinemas) will surprise you. Think of it as an adult playground where you can challenge yourself, have a laugh, and feel like a kid again!

When I lived in the UK, I used to love a show in the 1990s called the Crystal Maze, and the Hijinx Hotel challenge rooms remind me of this – except you won’t get locked in by host Richard O’Brien if you fail! This isn’t your typical escape room experience. Instead, you’ll find a collection of cleverly designed challenge rooms, each offering a unique game or puzzle to solve. From testing your reaction time with light-up buttons to showing off your coordination or memory skills, there’s something for everyone.

What I love most is how interactive it is – even the staff play along with the premise that you’re at a hotel – showing you to your rooms via the elevator.

Then you reach long corridors, with many, many doors to the rooms. I won’t give too much away, but the challenges are designed to be fun rather than frustrating. Each room gives you a few minutes to score as many points as possible, and friendly competition is encouraged.

I particularly enjoyed the ‘Dining Room’ where you need to match dishes to the diner.

There was another room “Exes and Ooohs” that has a throwing game of noughts and crosses.

All up, we did 5 rooms. You don’t need to be super athletic or tech-savvy to participate – but I will say that a few of the rooms did leave me a little out of breath!

It’s perfectly located within Karrinyup Shopping Centre, making it easy to combine with lunch or shopping (if you have the energy!). The whole experience takes about an hour, though you can stay longer if you want to try beating your scores.

Don’t let the bright colours and modern design fool you – this place isn’t just for kids, though older kids and teens will enjoy it too. It’s actually quite refreshing to do something that gets you moving and thinking in different ways.

Booking online is recommended, especially on weekends. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and be prepared for lots of laughs – it’s impossible not to – especially with the brilliant hosts who stay in character.

And just like any good hotel – there’s a bar at Hijinx to sit, catch your breath with a drink or bite to eat afterwards!
