Joondalup Resort

The Alcove Joondalup Resort

Joondalup Resort is in the northern suburbs of Perth and perhaps doesn’t get as much love as it should from the city dwellers.

Where else can one find a world-class golf course, a restaurant menu designed by one of Perth’s leading chefs, a spa and a huge swimming pool only 20 minutes from the city centre?

Well, I suppose there is always Crown but just for a change why not give Joondalup Resort a twirl?

Our room was clean, if slightly tired looking, but it was fine – queen-sized bed, good lighting, fridge and a desk. The balcony had a table and two chairs. The en-suite only had a shower, but rooms with a bath are also available. Wi-Fi is complimentary. As returning guests, we were given a 15% discount on our room and paid $228 for one night. Every staff member we spoke to was unfailingly polite and helpful.

Rooms are set out on an open-air walkway.  Sadly we had booked a basic room and had a view of the car park! But it was interesting to see golfers return to their cars – able to discern by how they walked, whether they had won or lost.

American Robert Trent Jones Jnr, who designed the internationally renowned Poppy Hills course at Pebble Beach in California, was responsible for designing the 27-hole golf course at Joondalup Resort. It is described as tough and uncompromising, with great scenic views. The design comprises three nine-hole courses: the Lake course, the Dune course and the Quarry course. Kangaroo spotting is, of course, a national pastime, and one can certainly enjoy the many kangaroos who appear at dusk and dawn on the golf courses.

Joondalup Resort is also home to Endota Spa, which offers a range of treatments from massages to organic body scrubs and facials.

Other facilities include a fully fitted gym and a full-sized tennis court. Equipment is supplied free of charge.  Utilising the Fairway Circle Walk (1hr 15mins) is a good way to start the day. Of course, joggers and walkers have to be aware of the many golfers on the actual courses. In keeping with the fitness theme, Joondalup Resort offers the hire of electric bikes at a steep price of $2 per 5 minutes or 4/8 hr passes.  A family pass, valid for 24 hrs includes four bikes at a cost of $120.

A small aviary and koi pool will keep the grandchildren entertained.

When the novelty of birds and fish wears off, guests can head to the resort’s lagoon-style swimming pool. There is a separate pool for younger children.

Joondalup Resort is home to three dining options:

The Alcove signature restaurant has a menu underwritten by   Stephen Clark, and I can personally attest to the food’s deliciousness.

The Tap Room Bar & Kitchen is only available for guests and golfers and is a relaxed pub-style dining option. Café 28 is located on the golf course side of the resort and has a covered open-air verandah for guests to enjoy a morning coffee or snacks.

Joondalup Resort is also a good entertainment venue catering for weddings and functions as well as often providing theme evenings with live music.

It’s only a five-minute drive to the Lakeside Shopping Centre with its huge array of shops and dining options. So if you are looking for somewhere different for a weekend or midweek break (at Staycation prices) try the Joondalup Resort.
