Perth’s historic places worth a day out

If you enjoy a day out that’s interesting, easy to pace, and filled with stories you can actually picture, Perth has plenty of heritage sites that deliver. From riverside landmarks and grand public buildings to maritime tales in Fremantle and engineering feats in the Hills, these spots make it simple to turn an ordinary outing into something memorable.

Many are centrally located, low‑cost (several are free), and ideal for a mid‑week visit when things are a little quieter.

The Old Mill, South Perth

One of Perth’s most recognisable landmarks, The Old Mill dates back to the 1830s and sits in a beautiful riverside setting. It’s a gentle, outdoors‑friendly stop where you can read the interpretive signage, stroll the grounds, and then continue on to the South Perth foreshore for a coffee, picnic or a slow walk with river views. The site also acknowledges its deeper cultural significance for First Nations peoples, adding important context to the area’s history.

Fremantle Prison, Fremantle

For those who like their history with a little edge, Fremantle Prison is one of WA’s most striking “step back in time” experiences. You’ll explore behind imposing limestone walls on a guided tour, with stories spanning convict life, prison routines and more recent chapters of WA’s justice history. Some tours can be confronting, so it’s best for confident visitors and anyone comfortable with darker historical themes.

The Round House, Fremantle

Completed in 1831, The Round House is Western Australia’s oldest surviving public building. It’s compact, easy to visit, and perched above the ocean with sweeping views over Bathers Beach. Time your visit for the 1pm cannon firing for a dose of living history (and a bit of theatrical flair). It’s a great add‑on if you’re already in Fremantle for lunch or a wander.

A few tips for an easy, enjoyable visit

Perth heritage outings tend to be more enjoyable when you keep them simple:

  • Aim for weekdays or early mornings if you prefer quieter spaces.
  • Plan one “main” stop and one “nearby add‑on” (for example: Fire Station + Royal Perth Hospital Museum).
  • Wear comfortable shoes—even small museums often involve standing and slow walking.
  • Take breaks: a sit-down coffee can be part of the experience, not an afterthought.
